The British Embassy Manila is a large diplomatic mission (around 250 staff) delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives on prosperity, security and consular matters. Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government department charged with securing UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade. In the Philippines, DIT works with colleagues in the British Embassy Manila and other partners to deliver trade objectives as part of the Asia Pacific (APAC) network and against an ambitious Regional Trade Plan. In APAC, DIT has over 200 staff working across 13 countries stretching from New Zealand to Myanmar, led by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) Natalie Black.

The post advertised is for a Senior Trade Manager based at the British Embassy in Manila working, primarily, with the Education sector and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The role reports to the Director of Trade & Investment in Manila and will directly manage a team focussed on delivering exports in the education sector and cultivating business opportunities with the Asian Development Bank. Additional responsibilities include leading on market issues in the financial services and food & drink sectors. The positon is also responsible for the line management of a secondary benefits advisor working across the Prosperity Fund programmes of the Embassy.

The successful candidate will be joining a high-performing team and will engage with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders, including senior contacts in UK businesses, trade associations, the Asian Development Bank and the Philippine Government.   S/he will be responsible for working with clients and delivering DIT initiatives across the Philippines and working as part of a regional Asia Pacific team. The successful candidate will support UK companies who are already exporting to the Philippines and draw in new exporters to opportunities in the market. S/he will be required to attend official functions outside of office hours, and undertake occasional travel (international and domestic).

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • Deliver an ambitious set of annual trade targets.
  • Forge strong relationships with Philippine and UK business leaders, trade associations and other key partners within the education sector, aid-funded business and across sector responsibilities.
  • Conceive and develop activities, and produce events with the goals of generating trade opportunities, reducing market access barriers, building relationships, and highlighting the strengths of the UK’s proposition.
  • Facilitate UK export growth by delivering business development activities to support innovative UK companies, including trade missions and campaigns.
  • Work closely with colleagues in London (DIT and FCDO) and the Asia Pacific region to deliver sector campaign activity and support UK Government priorities.
  • Effectively manage a team of three staff to maximise delivery and provide continuous development.
  • Manage and/or support visits by senior government officials by securing high-level meetings, organizing activities, and preparing briefing materials.
  • Maintain current knowledge of market trends, incentives, and centres of excellence in both the Philippines and UK.
  • Support the DIT lead on inward investment (where appropriate) as related to sector responsibilities.
  • Represent DIT and the British Embassy at external functions, including speaking engagements.
  • Undertake regular domestic and international travel.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues across the British Embassy.

  • Graduate with a university degree relevant to the job and at least 5 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience of leading a successful team.
  • Comfortable working with senior business contacts and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate expertise in relevant areas of economic development and international trade.
  • Strong people and networking skills.

This is a full time post. The post holder would be able to work flexibly through altered working hours (e.g. starting early or late, occasional remote work arrangements as agreed by line manager), provided they are able to make calls with colleagues in the UK when necessary and to travel as required.

The post holder’s sector responsibilities will be reviewed periodically to ensure that opportunities are maximised for UK plc.

The British Embassy offers a competitive compensation package, 36-hour work week, guaranteed 13th and 14th month pay, 20 days paid annual leave (calculated on Pro-rata basis if joined after 1 January), extensive medical insurance, life insurance and access to a guaranteed 5 days of learning opportunities a year.
