ASSOCIATE
Communications Division & International Justice Program

The Communications Division and International Justice Program (“IJP”) of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) are seeking a highly motivated candidate to provide administrative support to the two teams. This position is based in Brussels and is full-time at 38 hours per week.
Due to COVID-19, many of our offices are either closed or open in a reduced capacity. The successful candidate will be expected to work remotely until offices can safely re-open.
Responsibilities:
- Provide administrative support including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, responding to inquiries, recording and processing divisional finances, and making travel arrangements;
- Proofread, format, and distribute materials; Assist with coordinating the review, production, and distribution of reports, news releases, letters, charts, briefing papers, op-eds, other publications, and web content;
- Handle requests from the media and members of the public, monitor and maintain the inbox for the Human Rights Watch press desk;
- Maintain communication among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners;
- Create and maintain extensive contact databases and filing and archiving systems while ;
- Compile and analyze media coverage of reports, events, and the organization as a whole, write briefing documents for researchers and directors;
- Assist with promoting content on social media, maintaining webpages, and sourcing multimedia materials;
- Assist with the preparation of HRW’s “Daily Brief”;
- Monitor proceedings before the International Criminal Court;
- Assist with the recruitment, onboarding, supervision, and mentoring of interns and liaising with universities for partnerships;
- Assist with organizing events including press conferences and seminars, including Human Rights Watch’s annual World Report;
- Assist with some research tasks and provide support to associated multimedia projects when necessary; and
- Carry out other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor’s degree in communications, social sciences, international relations, or related studies is required. Coursework in international human rights, international justice, or the European Union is desirable.
Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
- Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
- Creativity, initiative, follow-through, ability to work independently, and excellent organizational skills are required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French are required; fluency in other European languages is highly desirable, particularly Italian or Polish.
- The ability to work well under pressure and to manage multiple priorities while working effectively toward deadlines is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within Human Rights Watch as well as with external partners are required.
- Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
- Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required.
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of Human Rights Watch are highly desirable.
