Main purpose of job

The intern will support several sections within the Embassy – principally political, projects, and communications, but also trade, consular and corporate services. Through this opportunity, the Embassy will provide valuable work experience for an Ecuadorean university student. This role will be of particular benefit to those whose studies focus on fields relevant to the activities of the British Embassy in Quito (BEQ). These could include but are not limited to: international relations, development studies, human rights, trade and investment, communications or economics.

British Embassy Intern: The intern will support the political, communications and projects team across a wide range of areas including the preparation of reports on key political and economic issues of interest to the UK, supporting the delivery of Embassy-funded projects and events, and helping with political monitoring. The intern will also be involved with communications and social media work and will support the consular team with outreach and visits, as well as other ad hoc tasks as required to assist with the functioning of the Embassy.

In addition, all members of BEQ staff pay an important role in responding to crises, should they arise. The intern will receive crisis training to enable them to fulfil this part of the role.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to respond flexibly to changing priorities.
  • Good writing skills in English and Spanish.
  • Interest in communication and political issues.

Language requirements:

Language: Fluent Spanish and Fluent English

Must have the legal status to live and work in Ecuadaor.

Experience in project coordination.

Interest in new communication trends and social media.  

Good writing skills in English and Spanish.

The FCO is committed to learning and development for all its employees, including interns. A wide variety of optional training is available, to be scheduled around work commitments. 

Interns also have the option of completing the International Academy Foundation Course. The course is equivalent to a City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in UK Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, a UK-recognised qualification.

6-month Civil Contract

Monthly internship salary of US$400 + IESS contributions paid by Embassy in full

Appointment will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. The successful candidate will be required to provide timely documentation to support these processes.
