Working to the Head of Commonwealth, Regional Engagement and Climate, this role is at the heart of climate policy within our regional team. The UK is a global leader on tackling climate change, being the largest donor to the Green Climate Fund and the first major economy to legislate on net zero carbon emissions.  This role is working within a highly ambitious and active regional climate team and global climate network.  The United Kingdom has secured the nomination to host COP26 in Glasgow in 2021. This role will be central to ensuring strong collaboration and partnership with Pacific Island States as we seek to raise global ambition and action. Creative thinking in order to promote the UK’s objectives in these spaces, in collaboration with our communications team, would be an asset. 

The internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the BHC’s work, with a focus on COP26 and project delivery. 

The British High Commission in Suva and our diplomatic posts in the region are implementing a number of projects to raise awareness in the region of key issues relating to climate change and the UK’s role as Presidency of COP 26, and to help highlight Pacific needs and priorities. The role of the jobholder will be to ensure that the projects are implemented rapidly and effectively, with a view to maximising the communications impact and positive feedback into preparations for COP 26.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field of diplomacy, while working in a fast paced, dynamic environment. The internship will offer insight into the public diplomacy work of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the opportunity to learn about a range of international issues.

Communications support and climate chnage 85%

  • Support the delivery of climate projects under the UK’s Climate Diplomacy Fund
  • Work closely with Pacific posts to support the delivery of regional climate projects
  • Support the Pacific Climate Change cell where appropriate on climate change policy
  • Work closely with communications team to maximise impact of UK projects
  • To support communications activities, helping to promote and raise the profile of the UK across the Pacific
  • To support high commission-related events, visits and public diplomacy activities

Post resilience 15%

  • Provide resilience and surge capacity to other areas of the post as required.

  • Strong interest in working in climate change project delivery
  • Experience in project delivery
  • Proficiency in English (both written and oral)
  • Good communication and organisational skills
  • Competent with Microsoft Office Software
  • Good numeracy skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and on own initiative

  • Experience (academic or real world) in the field of climate change policy
