Main purpose of job:
The British Consulate General Los Angeles invites applications from outstanding individuals for the position of Executive Assistant / Events Manager to the Consul-General.
This is a stimulating and varied role, involving lots of interaction with external contacts and teams across the British Consulate. The role will involve great organisation and planning skills, thinking creatively and excellent people skills.
The successful applicant will report directly to the Consul General and work closely with all the teams representing different elements of the British government’s work in Los Angeles. The British Consulate General in Los Angeles represents the UK government in Southern California, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
The individual will be responsible for:
- providing executive assistant and diary support to the Consul General including organising visits and handling correspondence;
- facilitating representational work by overseeing management of the Consul Generals’ Residence and running events;
- leading some event delivery for the broader consulate.
- Line management and supervision of the Residence Housekeeper
The role will also provide similar support on an ad hoc basis to the Deputy Consul General.
During the pandemic, event management will be lead virtually and/or in line with City guidance.

Other skills / experience / qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- 2-3 years relevant administrative experience in a fast-paced multi-faceted team environment is essential
- Experience of organising innovative events – in person and virtually.
- Great communication skills – orally and written. Proficiency in using internet applications, social media and the Microsoft Office suite
- Great interpersonal skills, and a strong team player who enjoys working with others and is able to integrate fully into a wider network-based team
- Expert in prioritisation, organisation, multitasking and time-management skills and the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
- Initiative, determination and responsibility
- Superior problem solving skills, common sense, and able to exercise good judgement in the face of conflicting priorities
- Experience of managing others
- Good understanding of the challenges and sensitivities of working in the world of government and politics

The Consulate has a flexible working policy, to be discussed and approved by your line manager.
At present all staff are working from home, but the applicant would be expected to attend the office when the Covid situation improves and circumstances permit office working.
