Summary of position:
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service is a world-wide network of professionals in international business development (IBD), with preferred access to business knowledge and contacts, who are committed to advancing Canadian interests abroad.
Under the direction of the Expo 2020 commercial program manager, or Senior Trade Commissioner, the incumbents will:
• Develop knowledge in assigned sectors or areas of responsibility, together with the political and economic context of local market conditions, to respond effectively to Canadian client inquiries
• Proactively build relationships with local contacts to identify opportunities for Canadian clients
• Effectively coordinate and manage the relationship with Canadian stakeholders to implement trade and investment initiatives
• Participate in the organization and execution of high-level visits and/or trade events
• Assist in the preparation of business plans for assigned trade sectors or areas of responsibility.

The Officers will be part of the EXPO 2020 Dubai Commercial Program team until the March 2022. The individuals will assist the commercial program manager in planning, coordinating, tracking and delivering commercial initiatives in close collaboration with the trade team. Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining a solid network of stakeholders, preparing communication and briefing materials for Canadian participants of the EXPO 2020 Dubai Commercial Program, and assisting in the management of projects and incoming trade delegations.

 

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education: University degree from a recognized institution.

Language: Fluency in English (spoken, written, comprehension)

Experience: Minimum 2 years (within the past 5 years) of relevant work experience in in the following areas:
• Working with commercial or government clients in international business development and/or investment promotion and/or project planning and management.
• Experience in developing Client and Stakeholder relationships, including preparing for and conducting meetings with key internal and external contacts.
• Experience preparing presentations, conducting research, and drafting reports.
• Experience in planning business programs with minimal supervision for at least one of the following: high-profile visits, trade shows, business promotion events, business-to-business meetings.

Rated Requirements
The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset Qualifications in their cover letter and CV.
• Fluency in French (oral and written).
• Fluency in Arabic (oral and written).
• Previous experience in working with a public or government organization.
• Previous experience in working in trade promotion in a diplomatic mission.
• Good knowledge of the Government of Canada’s policies and programs, including trade, investment and innovation policies, programs and institutions.
• Previous experience in working with Canadian business stakeholders.
• Established networks/relationships in the United Arab Emirates.

Operational Requirements:
• Ability to travel to meet clients and stakeholders, including for events and training courses, around Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Northern Emirates, and worldwide, as required.
• There may be a requirement to work additional hours including statutory holidays, weekends, and after normal working hours. Normal working week is 37.5 hours.

 

Condition(s) of Employment:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a UAE residence visa.
• Ability to obtain and retain an enhanced reliability clearance (security clearance).
• Maintenance of a valid passport.
• As a member of the Canadian diplomatic presence abroad, required to adhere to Canada’s Code on Values & Ethics.
