Summary of position:
Under the general supervision of the Manager Academic Relations/Public Affairs, the Public Affairs Assistant provides administrative and clerical support to the Manager; assists with public affairs tasks, including organization of public affairs events, responding to public information inquiries, researching and development of a range of communications materials including content for social media, and contributes to the overall delivery of the mission’s public advocacy program.

 

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:
• Tertiary level qualification in Public Relations/and or communications, from an accredited college or university or combined education and relevant experience.

Language:
• Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.

Experience:
• Demonstrated recent* experience in a public relations or communications position in dealing with external stakeholders and media in a public affairs environment.
• Recent* experience in using social media as a public relations tool on behalf of an organization or government entity.
• Recent* experience in writing press / media releases or other communications for the public and media.
• Recent* event management experience.

* “recent” is defined as within the past 2-3 years

Rated Requirements:

The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Knowledge:
• Experience working with local media required and national media desired.
• Demonstrated experience with social media and web communications and promotion in an organizational context.
• Experience in creating visual assets for digital communication.
• Extensive knowledge of Canada.
• Knowledge of public affairs and communication methods and techniques.

Abilities / skills:
• Excellent administration skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher) and Microsoft Outlook. While not required, experience using Canva, Mailchimp, SurveyMonkey, and Adobe software such as InDesign, Photoshop and Premier Pro, would be ideal.
• Ability to work with media as required.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to conduct internet-based and other research.
• Excellent organizational skills:
o Demonstrated experience with event organization.
o Ability to organize and maintain effective databases and files both electronically and paper-based where required.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.

Operational Requirements:
• Working hours are Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week – 8:30 to 16:30
• Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends), sometimes on short notice

 

Condition(s) of Employment:
The successful candidate must:
• Able to obtain and retain a Government of Canada Reliability Status, which includes a criminal background check. This clearance is a requirement prior to appointment from the Government of Canada. This involves, among other things, Australian Federal Police checks, credit checks, and validation of qualifications. The required level of security clearance must be maintained throughout the employment period.
• Only Australian citizens, permanent residents or those holding a valid visa permitting them to work unrestricted in Australia will be eligible to apply. The High Commission of Canada in Australia is unable to provide employment sponsorship.
