Main purpose of job:

  • To provide support to the Chevening and Political team on administrative duties, with a particular focus on tasks related to the promotions and smooth running of the Chevening Programme in Brazil.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Chevening Programme is the UK government’s global scholarship scheme established in 1983, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. Chevening in Brazil has supported over 1700 individuals to study a one-year taught master’s degree and has developed into a prestigious international scheme.

The British Embassy Brasilia invites applications from students in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, International Relations, Politics or related courses to join the Chevening team in Brazil. The successful candidate will have the chance to work face-to-face with diplomats and senior managers, as well as with a large network of external stakeholders.

Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Supporting on liaising with the Chevening Alumni Network by mapping, tracking and establishing contacts with stakeholders;
  • Updating database and alumni lists, organising meetings and keeping records of engagement;
  • Assisting on the organisation of key Chevening events across Brazil, sending out invitations, managing confirmation of guests, liaising with service providers and booking venues;
  • Assisting in marketing and communications for the Chevening programme in Brazil throughout the year, creating innovative communication materials and sending out regular communications through e-mail and social media;
  • Taking meeting notes, drafting reports and helping to prepare briefings for the Ambassador and other senior Embassy staff; and
  • Providing administrative and research support to the Chevening and wider British Embassy Political team.

The successful candidate will develop their already strong organisational abilities and strengthen both oral and written English skills. On-the-job support and feedback will be provided and, where possible, opportunities to combine the academic interests of the successful candidate with Embassy work will be identified.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, pro-active and self-motivated with excellent organisational, interpersonal, and communications skills in both English and Portuguese. Applicants must also have excellent computer skills, particularly MS Outlook, MS Office Package (Microsoft Excel is essential) and knowledge of editing platforms.

Language requirements: Portuguese and English

Level of language required: Advanced

We encourage candidates studying Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or similar subjects. Previous experience with basic organisation of events and managing databases would be an advantage.

Learning and development opportunities:

The Embassy runs a number of learning and development opportunities throughout the year with a dedicated Embassy staff member assigned to help intern development.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount. 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, members of staff at the Consulates and the Embassy are currently working from home. When we head back to the office, the intern is expected to join both the Chevening Programme Manager and Chevening Programme Assistant at the British Consulate-General in São Paulo.
