Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) team in the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur has a vacancy for Trade Manager- Education, on a fixed term contract for six months.

Reporting to the Deputy Director (Malaysia), the jobholder will develop and implement the Malaysian element of the Asia Pacific Education Trade Campaign, delivering export wins and identifying and tackling relevant market access barriers. This will include working across our Asia Pacific network, with teams in the wider High Commission and the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and with headquarters in London. There will be opportunities for travel within Malaysia and, occasionally, in the region and to the UK.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?  

Main Duties:

  • Develop and implement the Malaysian element of the Asia Pacific Education Trade Campaign, ensuring cost and time effective deployment of resources (budget and staff), so that it delivers wins to the UK economy in the form of increased exports and overseas direct investment
  • Work collaboratively with the Asia Pacific Education Lead (also based in DIT Malaysia) and across the region, with other teams in the High Commission and the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, and with colleagues in the Education sector team in our London headquarters to ensure DIT work fits the bigger picture
  • Proactively develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the Education market in Malaysia, including local players, trends, opportunities, challenges and competitors, and use this knowledge in one to one meetings, presentations and market research reports, to advise UK-based players on how to do business successfully in Malaysia
  • Identifying and building productive relationships with key stakeholders and influencers in public and private sectors in Malaysia and the UK
  • Designing and delivering events and other activity, virtual/physical/hybrid, primarily in Malaysia which promote UK capability    
  • Contribute to briefing, speeches and programmes for UK Ministers, other VIPs and senior officials engaging with Malaysia, and likewise for Malaysians engaging with the UK 
  • Effective housekeeping including uploading evidence of services and interactions with key contacts to the Departmental Database, providing fortnightly updates of activity and progress to the Asia Pacific Regional Trade Commissioner’s office and submitting accurate bids for funding and robust reporting of budgets.

Essential on arrival:

  • Good IT skills including proficiency in the latest Microsoft Office applications.
  • Degree holder, with business-related specialisations an advantage
  • At least 3 years work experience, preferably in Education or related sectors within Malaysia
  • Able to lead and communicate flexibly across a wide range of stakeholders, organisations, and cultures with sensitivity and effectiveness
  • Excellent written and spoken English with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels
  • Ability to establish relationships with a wide range of stakeholders to support delivery of business outcomes
  • Embodies and encourages collaborative team working within own team and across the wider network
  • Alert to emerging opportunities and challenges which might impact or benefit the team’s work, on demand and supply sides
  • Skilled in the design and delivery of strategy, and evaluation of short and longer term impact- aligning with with DIT APAC/Malaysia Country Plans and thereby the BHC Country Business Plan

  • Academic qualifications and/or work experience related to Education

This is a Maternity Cover for six months contract.

The British High Commission offers a competitive remuneration package, benefits, leave entitlement of 20 days per annum (calculated on pro rata basis) and works hard to provide L&D opportunities to staff. Staff have access to a wide variety of online resources through the Diplomatic Academy and Civil Service Learning.  The jobholder will be required to take some specific training courses related to their role. All new staff undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses covering areas such as diversity, health and safety, and information management.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed): 

A mix of formal and informal learning and development will be provided; including induction to DIT, the FCDO/British High Commission, Developing Sector Knowledge

The British High Commission Malaysia supports and promotes flexible working. 

Full time strongly preferred, but part-time could also be considered.

The standard working hours for the BHC are 08:00 to 16:30. We are happy to offer a variety of flexible working patterns, including non-standard working hours, working remotely or working compressed hours.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment and security checks. Staff who are locally recruited by the British High Commission are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.
