Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

This role will be required to:

  • Coordinate and direct the delivery of the diversity and inclusion (D&I) strategy of the UK Government operations in the US Network, based at the Embassy in Washington, DC, they will partner across the whole US Network at all levels.
  • Lead on the interpretation and implementation of Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) policy advice from London, keeping D&I at the forefront of organisational decision making, providing advice on all aspects of best practice in conjunction with the Regional Inclusion Partner (RIP).
  • Research and suggest actions relating to D&I objectives, take forward action plans, and report on progress to the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical or expert advice to senior management teams and support policy development work.
  • Promote awareness of diversity and equality in the British Embassy and across the wider US network using a range of different strategies including the development of training events, the facilitation of a regular reporting structure for senior leaders, and contributions to the learning and development programme.    
  • Support the inclusive management of relevant talent across the US network, exploring opportunities to improve the way we work and model best practice across the network.
  • Break down diversity and equality barriers through the development of strategic partnerships within underrepresented communities.
  • Help to reduce discrimination and exclusion; reduce cultural bias.
  • Other ad hoc duties as required. 

  • At least 2 or more years of experience working in the field of diversity and inclusion
  • A passion for working to achieve equality for all
  • Strong influencing skills with a record of delivering through others
  • A developed understanding of the UK and US D&I landscape
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Office
  • Resilience and ability to manage and resolve conflict
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of creativity and innovation

  • Experience of working with UK government departments
  • Experience of data analysis and action planning
  • Experience and knowledge of setting up training programmes
  • Experience of policy making through a consultative and collegiate approach
  • Track record of collaborating and partnering across organisations to deliver change

Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Permanent Residents or A visa holders with EAD cards*. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
