Online internship opportunity with the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor – Impact team

Duration: February to May 2021, 1 – 3 days per week

The Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor is currently looking for an intern to provide support to a small and dynamic team which provides research on the global impact of landmine and cluster munition contamination.

Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor (“the Monitor”) provides research and monitoring for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and the Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC). The Monitor is a joint initiative of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines – Cluster Munition Coalition (ICBL-CMC) and provides the most up-to-date and relevant information on and assessment of the international community’s response to the problems caused by landmines, cluster munitions, and other explosive remnants of war.

Internship description

  • Compiling, labelling and entering data for use in Monitor overview chapters;
  • Drafting letters to key mine action stakeholders based on Monitor research findings, with the aim of supporting data use through active engagement and seeking clarifications for future reporting;
  • Research and/or translation on aspects of coordination and planning, contamination, casualties, land release, risk education, and victim assistance in selected agreed countries;
  • Researching a proposed topic of specific interest agreed with the intern;
  • Drafting a working paper, factsheet, or section of a Monitor overview chapter on this particular research subject.

Desired qualifications

  • Degree or studies in International Affairs, International Law, Human Rights, or similar;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Good communication skills in English, at or close to native speaker/writer;
  • Research skills;
  • Writing ability;
  • Strong skills in using Microsoft office package- Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
  • Tech savvy with knowledge of social media and social networking tools, platforms, etc.;
  • Language skills in Arabic, French or Spanish, a plus;
  • Strong preference for some knowledge of cluster munition and mine ban policy, mine action, disability rights/disability issues- either through education or personal experience.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for this internship, one of the following situations must apply:

  • Be enrolled in a course of study leading to a degree or professional qualification;
  • Having recently complete a first degree (e.g. Bachelor’s), or planning to undertake an advance degree (e.g. Master’s) on condition that the university awarding the degree attests the relevance and usefulness of the internship;
  • Counting with financial support from the applicant’s university or grant/scholarship for purpose of the internship, and be a citizen of European Union (EU) or European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member countries;
  • Internships can also be pursued with the aim of assisting the intern’s social or professional reintegration, under the oversight of the cantonal or federal-level authorities.

Conditions

Unfortunately, the Monitor is not in a position to offer any financial remuneration to interns. All interns are responsible for all expenses and costs incurred in undertaking an internship with the ICBL-CMC, including travel and health insurance.
