The WaterAid Policy Team (part of the Policy and Campaigns Department) works, together with country programme and regional staff, to influence evidence-based policy change at national and international level to ensure that the poorest communities gain access to water, sanitation and hygiene services.
As our Senior Policy Analyst- Hygiene you will act as WaterAid’s policy lead working to improve global prioritisation and public policy on good practice approaches to hygiene.
In this role, you will lead WaterAid’s policy analysis and influencing to advance hygiene within global and national discourses. Working with country programmes and fellow hygiene leads across the organisation you will develop policy analysis and research solutions to strengthen the performance and inclusion of hygiene in national policies, plans and processes to deliver sustainable hygiene services for all.
You’ll also:
Work with WaterAid country programmes and partners to develop innovative research and analysis to strengthen the capacity and effectiveness of the sector and share evidence on what works when it comes to tackling these challenges at programme and systems level. Develop high quality influencing resources and work closely with country programmes, the Policy and Campaigns Department and communications teams to develop context-relevant, evidence-based policy messages and influencing materials.
Establish strong working relationships with key actors including UN agencies, development partners and other actors relevant to advancing hygiene policy change. Represent WaterAid in external networks, platforms and conferences relevant to hygiene policy influencing. Act as focal point for WaterAid’s policy work on Hand Hygiene for All initiative ensuring expert policy input.
To be successful, you’ll need:
- An exceptional ability in critical thinking with experience of originating and proactively promoting innovative and evidence-based public policy options.
- A proven track record of delivering high quality, original research and translating research and policy analysis into impactful influencing strategies.
- A strong track record of successfully influencing national or international development policy
- Significant level of experience in international development policy and policy-making in low income and least developed countries.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally (and nationally) as required by the role. When post-COVID-19 practices are resumed, this may be up to 4 to 6 weeks a year.
Salary: The UK-based salary for this role is £49,000 per annum. Pay and benefits will be adjusted according to location

This is an office-based post in a country where WaterAid has a presence. In particular, we are encouraging people with extensive experience of working in the Global South to apply.

Due to current restrictions on office capacity the majority of our staff are working from home. All aspects of this including how we are supporting homeworking and the office transition will be discussed at the interview stage with you.
