About Emergency Nutrition Network (ENN)
ENN’s vision is that every individual caught up in a nutritional emergency, or suffering from malnutrition anywhere in the world, gets the most effective help possible. ENN undertakes knowledge management, research and advocacy to support national governments, civil society, UN, donor and academic organisations. Through these collaborations we support agencies to implement evidence-based nutrition programming, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries and in fragile and conflict affected states.

ENN is a well-established and highly respected UK-based, registered charity (founded in 1996) working to reduce undernutrition globally. ENN is governed by a Board of Trustees and has its head office in Oxfordshire, UK. ENN is financially supported by foundations and trusts, bilateral donors, international non- governmental organisations and United Nations agencies.

ENN and Management of nutritionally At risk Mothers and Infants under 6 months (MAMI)
In 2009, an ENN led research report spotlighted a significant global burden of wasting in infants under 6 months of age (estimated at 8.5 million worldwidei), with little provision for their care in policy guidance and multiple challenges in case managementii. Infants under 6 months managed in programmes designed for older children had higher mortality compared to children over 6 months of age within the same programmeiii. Case management of infants under 6 months relied on inpatient care, with no provision for community-based management (an option available for older children) for those requiring less intensive or different care pathways.

Prompted by these significant gaps, a MAMI Special Interest Group (MAMI SIG) was established by ENN in 2010 to raise awareness and coordinate action to catalyse policy and programme change. Co-led with LSHTM and informed by a championing group of NGOs including Save the Children, GOAL and MSF, the MAMI SIG has evolved into a dynamic international community of policy-makers, programmers and researchers that has influenced WHO policy guidance, programming, research agendas and multi-stakeholder priorities including donors and government. The ENN has established strong working relationships with WHO, UNICEF, academic institutions, NGOs, individual experts and increasingly, with national authorities.

Bi-annual meetings, core working partnerships from field to global policy level, and collegiate peer exchange have been productive and informative, informing and catalysing greater MAMI awareness, programme innovation, policy change and research. There is now demand and opportunity to scale up our collective coordinated action in order to make the most of MAMI being high on the global nutrition policy and country agendas; evidence underpinning MAMI work still being sparse and weak; and the MAMI SIG increasingly being approached as the ‘go to’ place for policy-makers, programmers, and researchers.

To step up to this opportunity, ENN recruited a MAMI Global Network Coordinator to support scale up of the MAMI SIG into a MAMI Global Network. Supported by the MAMI Global Network Co-Leads at ENN and LSHTM, this new position was created to drive and manage the MAMI Global Network developments and activities as we embark on a new phase in the MAMI initiative. Now underway, this process includes the formalisation of the Network’s governance structures and ways of working, and the development of a five-year strategy and workplan whilst continuing to support and develop ongoing and emerging activities. These include support to an update of the MAMI Care Pathway Package (formerly the C-MAMI Tool), which will be released in the coming months and develop working collaborations with key stakeholders.
