The Senior Communications Specialist will deliver compelling success stories, thought leadership pieces and other marketing materials written in engaging, concise English. This position will participate in Venture37 communication strategy planning and support activities that advance organizational, programmatic and new business goals and is responsible for creating original written and visual content on a variety of digital and media platforms with the highest standards of delivery and service. This position requires the ability and desire to track and explore industry trends, platforms and relationships to reach target audiences and must be able to manage multiple, often complex and highly visible projects simultaneously in a diplomatic manner and independently manage competing and shifting timelines and priorities to ensure that deadlines are met. The Senior Communications Specialist understands and has experience in the international development sector and has a blend of excellent writing and digital media management skills.

The Senior Communications Specialist will report to the Senior Communications Manager. Location is Arden Hills, Minnesota or Washington, D.C.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Content creation and editing for a wide variety of audiences and publishing platforms (web, social, InDesign publications, video, storytelling, thought leadership pieces, presentations, pitch decks, proposals, reports, etc.), adapting style, creative approach and voice accordingly. This includes interviewing, content capture, translation of technical information, and facilitation of team alignment around key messages, timelines, review processes and distribution planning.
  • Serve as proactive communications contributor (ex: marketing communications planning, writing, social media campaigns, video production, creation of visual assets, website content management) on cross functional teams that contribute to organizational goals, such as USAID and USDA proposals, other donor proposals and high visibility project management initiatives (ex: project legacy documentation, webinars, in-country events, etc.).
  • Manage publishing, monitoring and troubleshooting (with IT) of owned digital platforms, including Venture37 website and social platforms.
  • Analyze and report impact of work, using a combination of objective and subjective measures. Use learning to continually improve.
  • Build relationships and pursue industry knowledge of platforms, events and trends to expand communications reach with target audiences.

Required Experience/Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing or International Development, plus 2-4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Prior experience with USAID, USDA, other bilateral and multilaterals, foundations and corporates working in the international development space.
  • Strong project management, and organizational skills; able to write persuasively and adapt writing style depending on audience and communication objectives.
  • Experience with InDesign, social media management and website content management.
  • Ability to translate complex topics for non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects to successful outcomes in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, and highly collaborative environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently, nationally, and internationally 10% of time.
  • Experience managing photoshoots and videoshoots preferred.
  • Graphic design experience a plus.
