The UNICEF Archives’ goal is to take a systemic approach to preserving the organization’s institutional heritage. It aims to provide improved archival preservation of both physical and digital materials and creating platforms for access through developing viable archival descriptions as well as engaging modern access platforms that satisfy client research needs. The Archives also aims to engage technology solutions through making use of new digital preservation capabilities. These goals will be implemented in line with the organizational strategy and information management requirements of stakeholders in various business areas.
How can you make a difference?
The purpose of this consultancy is to appraise and describe UNICEF archival records according to the General International Standard Archival Description [ISAD(G)] and implement archival guidelines that support teams regarding the identification, appraisal, arrangement and description, and preservation and conservation of archival records.
The Archives Specialist/Consultant will work under the supervision of the Archivist to ensure information is managed accurately and appropriately.
Key Responsibilities:

Appraise records to evaluate whether they meet the criteria for inclusion in the Archives;

Arrange and describe archival records according to ISAD(G);

Create finding aids, and perform data entry;
-
Contribute to the implementation of archival policies, i.e. access, accessioning, appraisal;

Participate in the development of an implementation framework for an Archives Management System and a Trusted Digital Repository;

Support the UNICEF Archivist with guidance to Interns;

Performs other duties as required.
Deliverables:
-
Support the operationalization and implementation of archival guidelines regarding the identification, appraisal, arrangement and description; and preservation and conservation of archival records.

Create Archival Finding Aids for physical records.

Respond to access and research requests in accordance with internally defined guidelines.

Support the development of the Archives’ access and communication platform with researchers.

Develop content for the Archives’ communication platform.

Support the development of an implementation plan for Archives Management System and Trusted Digital Repository.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Academic Degrees:
-
An advanced university degree in Archival Studies or related field, or equivalent experience
Professional Experience:
-
A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in archival arrangement and description.
Other Skills and Qualifications:
-
Highly organized and process oriented
-
Demonstrated knowledge of international archival standards – ISAD(G)
-
Experience with large scale digitization projects is a strong asset

Knowledge of digital preservation and ability to develop digital preservation implementation plan
-
Understanding of international development issues and previous experience with a multilateral or UN organization is a strong asset

Strong communication and advocacy skills to raise awareness with senior colleagues on archival matters

Highly proficient with desktop applications such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and an ability to learn new IT systems
-
Physical Ability to lift archival boxes in the range of 20 lbs
Language Requirements:
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
