Protocol, Visits and Events
Main purpose of job:
To provide protocol and political support to the Ambassador, ensuring effective diary management, organisation of visits, and replies to correspondence. To contribute to analysis of the political situation in Niger and provide regular media monitoring reports. To implement the Embassy communications strategy through social media. To provide cover for the Corporate Services Manager when they are absent on annual leave and minimum consular services (not visas) to the small British community in Niger.
The British Embassy Niamey is new and the Special Assistant role will be essential to helping the Ambassador to establish their network and understanding of the situation in Niger, as well as to support Embassy outreach activities to raise awareness of the UK’s presence in Niger. It is an exciting and unique opportunity to contribute to establishing a new Embassy and to ensuring that the UK’s diplomatic presence maximises its potential for positive impact in Niger.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
Protocol
- Efficient management of the Ambassador’s diary, organisation of meetings and visits.
- Establish a network with other protocol leads for Nigerien leaders and the international community to enable access and meetings for the Ambassador.
- Maintain an up to date list of contacts for the Embassy.
- Receive correspondence to the Ambassador, advise on how to respond and write replies.
Political
- Support to the Ambassador and Political Officer on analysis of the political and economic situation in Niger and the region
- Write regular media monitoring reports for distribution to the UK network in the Sahel and UK.
- Advice to the Ambassador on who to meet with from the Nigerien political community.
International relations
- Support to the Ambassador on writing Note Verbales to the Nigerien government on bilateral and international affairs.
- Translation of documents from English into French.
Communications and event management
- Support to implementing the Embassy communications strategy through use of social media, outreach activities, and event management.
Corporate/Consular Services
- Cover for the Corporate Services Manager (administration, finance) when they are away or on annual leave.
- Basic consular services (not visas) for the very small British Community in Niger, with help from British Embassy Accra.
Wider embassy support
As a full member of the embassy team, the post holder will also make a wider contribution to making the Embassy a friendly and supportive environment to work in. Where necessary, the post holder must be ready to support any other Embassy business (e.g. emergency consular, political or corporate work).
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to work at pace on multiple priorities at the same time, taking the initiative where required
- Knowledge of the Niger political system and situation.
- IT literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams and other common software)
- Social media skills (Facebook, Twitter and other)
- Critical thinking skills – an ability to think independently, critically analyse information and draw out conclusions
- Ability to work independently and unsupervised, and as part of a wider team
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject
- Fluent French oral and written
- Extensive English oral and written
- Experience of working with the Nigerien government and/or the international community in Niger
- Experience of events organisation
- Experience of using communications professionally to promote organisations

- The starting monthly salary is fixed at XOF 889,734 gross per month including 20% guaranteed allowances (non-taxable) as well as payment of a 13th month salary and potential non-consolidated performance bonuses. The Embassy deducts the income tax and CNSS contribution at source and pay them on behalf of the employee. These are calculated according to the provisions set by the Niger CNSS and Tax Inspectorate.
