The British Embassy in Vilnius is looking for a Political Support Officer. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support the embassy’s preparations for the 2021 COP26 climate change conference, develop diplomatic skills and contribute to strengthening the UK’s relationship with Lithuania.

This is an interesting time to join the Embassy, as we look at new and creative ways of working, following the UK’s exit from the EU and during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. This role will be suited to someone who is creative team player, with strong interpersonal and administrative skills, who is keen to develop their policy skills. 

Roles and responsibilities:

Policy Support – Climate Change (30%)

Provide support on climate change policy, in the lead up to the COP26 Conference. This will include:

  • Providing analysis of Lithuania’s approach to climate change and identify opportunities for engagement.
  • Working closely with embassy science and innovation, economics and prosperity, and trade leads, to ensure a joined up approach to embassy energy and climate change work.
  • Building a wide network of contacts amongst Lithuania’s key climate change influencers.

Political Team Support (25%)

  • Assisting with the organisation of Political Team visits, travel and events.
  • Developing and maintain effective administrative systems for tracking core support tasks.
  • Contributing to regular political team meetings.
  • Providing cover for Communications Officer on ad-hoc basis (providing press and media monitoring).

Engagement with UK University Alumni and Future Leaders (15%)

Strengthen the Embassy’s relationship with Lithuanian alumni from UK universities and Lithuanian future leaders through:

  • Developing ideas for engaging with Lithuanian alumni (in particular alumni from the UK Chevening scholarship scheme);
  • Identify young and future Lithuanian leaders, across different sectors;
  • Work with Political Team and British Council colleagues to identify opportunities for the Embassy to engage with Lithuanian young people.

Ad Hoc Policy Support (15%)

Provide support to the political section on emerging domestic policy issues (such as LGBTQ issues or future UK-Lithuania cooperation). This will include:

  • Providing analysis and reporting on emerging issues;
  • Identify opportunities for engagement, where there is cross-over with UK Government priorities;
  • Highlight sensitivities and risks of engagement on these emerging issues;

Corporate Tasks (15%)

  • Acting as budget administration lead for the Political Team, keeping all team members up to date with deadlines and reporting requirements;
  • Providing secretarial support for the embassy Programme Board, drawing up and circulating meeting agendas and writing up meeting notes;
  • Additional ad hoc corporate tasks.

  • Fluent level of English and Lithuanian (C1 level, according to CEFR*);
  • Strong administrative skills and experience (i.e.: office assistant or manager, corporate support / secretary);
  • Confident communicator;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to prioritise/handle multiple tasks and respond quickly to changing circumstances.

  • Knowledge of climate change issues;
  • Experience of working in an international environment;
  • Some experience in project management or working on projects.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract until 31 December 2021.
