Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy Seoul’s Investment Team attracts and supports Korean companies to invest in the UK through both FDI and capital investment. The UK tech sector is the world’s third largest, valued at over $1.2tr, with world leading companies and expertise in sectors such as AI and quantum.
As our Tech Sector Investment Lead (Maternity Cover), the successful candidate will lead the work to connect with industry leaders, drive high-impact investment projects and help world-class tech companies expand into the UK’s thriving innovation ecosystem. Specifically, you will aim to secure investment e.g. from big tech companies and financial institutions into AI data centres in AI Growth Zones, venture capital (VC) investment into UK funds and start-ups, and have potential to also work on other sectors e.g. life sciences investment.
We are seeking a strategic, proactive, networking individual with flexibility/adaptability given the fast-moving landscape who can build strong relationships with potential investors, educate and influence them on the investment opportunities the UK offers and support them through the whole investment process.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
Build and maintain investment relationships
- Proactively build a network of contacts in large tech companies, VCs and industry associations.
- Develop and maintain close relationships with these investors to understand their business needs and encourage their investment into the UK.
- Secure UK government access with companies from working-level to C-suite.
- Systematic account management and tracking engagement with ‘key accounts’.
Pipeline development and delivery
- Work with colleagues in the UK to understand the UK’s investment needs and match with the business objectives of investors, to prioritise and pursue investment projects.
- Work with investors from early stage informing through to landing investment. Providing them support and solutions to make the investment process as smooth as possible.
- Systematically track pipeline project details, interactions and update internal stakeholders.
Sector expertise
- Develop and maintain expertise in the tech sector, including businesses’ activities, UK policies and some technical knowledge.
- Engage with tech companies and investors in a way that gives them confidence you are part of their sector.
Campaigns, events, visits and communication
The above will be delivered through:
- Strategic campaigns that assess our current position, ideal future position and activities to achieve the change required.
- Events to engage with investors such as workshops and pitching sessions. Securing Korean investors to attend events in the UK such as London Tech Week, working with colleagues in HQ.
- Visits of senior UK officials and Ministers from the UK to Korea to meet with your contacts.
- Using Embassy and local media platforms to advance the perception of UK tech.
Cross-Embassy and Corporate
- Working with colleagues across the Embassy e.g. to UK promote Economic Growth.
- Working closely with the Embassy’s Digital Diplomacy Team to align priorities, inform each other’s work and land investment.
- 10% of your time will be for contributing to the broad goals and environment of the Embassy through a corporate role.
