Who We Are
The British Embassy in Prague is part of the UK’s global diplomatic network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. Our work supports UK foreign policy goals, deepens bilateral cooperation, and strengthens values‑based partnerships. We are now looking for a Senior Political Officer (Climate, Energy & Values) who will join a supportive, collaborative mission committed to climate action, energy security, equality, and regional engagement across Central Europe.
Main Purpose of the Role
As Senior Political Officer (Climate, Energy & Values), you will play a central role in driving the Embassy’s climate and energy agenda while supporting UK priorities on equality and minority rights.
This is a fantastic opportunity to build policy expertise, work with international partners, and help shape conversations on two of today’s most important policy areas: climate & energy and values & equality.
What You Will Do
Climate & Energy Policy (60%)
- Lead the Embassy’s climate and energy agenda, aligned with UK Government priorities.
- Work closely with the Central Europe Network (CEN) and regional partners to ensure coherent climate engagement.
- Monitor, analyse and report on climate change, sustainability, and energy developments in Czechia and Central Europe.
- Provide timely, evidence‑based reporting to Embassy leadership and UK Government departments.
Values & Equality Issues (40%)
- Support UK engagement on equality, minority rights, and wider values‑based initiatives.
- Build and maintain strong networks across government, NGOs, civil society, business, and other embassies.
- Use project and public diplomacy tools to influence debate and raise awareness.
- Produce clear reporting to support UK policy development.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Full professional proficiency in Czech and English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
- Previous working experience in climate policy and/or energy issues;
- Programme and/or project management experience;
- Strong organisational and networking skills;
- Experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders;
- Ability to draft policy and programme reports in clear English.

- Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Public Policy, International Relations, Climate and Environment Science);

This is an 18‑month, part‑time temporary position (26.25 hours per week) offered as a maternity cover contract. Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 17:00, with the possibility of agreeing a flexible working arrangement. Staff are entitled to time off in lieu for any additional hours worked. Annual leave entitlement is five weeks per year, pro rata, and the Embassy observes up to 14 Czech/UK public holidays each year.
The monthly salary for this position is CZK 50,400 (gross) for 26.25 hours per week. In addition, staff receive a meal vouchers contribution.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a professional background check, medical check, security clearance and a three‑month probationary period.
Applicants must already have the right to work in the Czech Republic. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in the Czech Republic are employed under Terms and Conditions of Service governed by Czech employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold an independent right to live and work in the Czech Republic and be able to maintain that status for the duration of the contract.
