Economic growth is the number one mission of the British Government, and the British Embassy Ulaanbaatar is working to maximise our international growth opportunities in Mongolia.
The Growth and Prosperity officer Mongolia leads the UK Government’s growth agenda in-country, working within the British Embassy in Ulaanbaatar. The role sits at the heart of the UK’s economic diplomacy efforts in Mongolia and supports the wider bilateral relationship
This role will lead on:
- Promoting the UK as a stable economy and attractive investment destination
- Building and maintaining strategic economic partnerships created to benefit the whole of the UK
- Assists in the development and negotiation of agreements to facilitate UK trade and investment
- Work closely with businesses and investors to deliver growth across the UK
The jobholder will work closely with FCDO and DBT colleagues across the region, thematic and policy teams in London, and senior Embassy staff including the Ambassador.
The jobholder will identify and secure funding for projects and lead on delivering them.
Success in this role requires a blend of trade policy expertise, political acumen, and strategic engagement to build trusted relationships and deliver tangible outcomes for the UK’s Growth Agenda.
Role and responsibilities:
Growth and Prosperity Lead Mongolia would support delivery of HMG’s Growth Agenda including Industrial, Trade and Critical Minerals Strategies, to foster mutual economic growth between the UK and Mongolia.
The job holder would:
- Create connections and identify opportunities for British expertise to contribute to UK priorities, and harness the opportunities of Mongolian rapid economic growth for British businesses
- Seek opportunities for trade cooperation with third countries in Mongolia
- Deliver and provide day-to-day leadership of FCDO’s new Critical Minerals strategy which links growth and climate objectives. Advise senior leadership in Post where necessary and provide recommendations on priorities
- Build on UK-Mongolia projects to support English Language to develop opportunities for British partners to support the education and higher education sector
- Lead monitoring of UK policies related to sanctions implementation to ensure compliance with international regulations.
- Lead work to strengthen the business and regulatory environment in Mongolia to support FDI.
External Stakeholders
- Build and develop a broad network of relevant business and government relationships with the highest significance for the UK’s economic growth interests, including strategic relationship management of key accounts alongside senior HMG representatives.
- Provide advice and analysis on UK-Mongolia business and trade relations as required to colleagues at the Embassy, including the Ambassador and senior team.
- Take an active leadership role, helping to shape debate, contribute ideas and identify opportunities, including on wider government, regional and embassy priorities.
- Treat colleagues and others fairly with respect, playing a leading role in championing and role-modelling a positive and inclusive embassy and wider regional culture.
Political Acumen and Strategic Engagement
- Bring a deep understanding of trade policy with the ability to translate this into effective, locally grounded diplomacy.
- Demonstrate strong political awareness and context, enabling credible engagement with senior stakeholders across government and industry.
- Build trusted relationships and operate confidently across political and institutional boundaries, ensuring the UK is well-positioned to influence and access key decision-makers in Mongolia to support priority UK growth objectives.

- Strategic Trade and Investment Expertise: Proven experience in delivering trade and investment outcomes – by having a record of delivery in at least one of the following: (1) understanding and shaping policies to generate economic growth, (2) navigating market access barriers for UK economic growth, (3) securing high-value investment in the UK
- Political Acumen and Diplomatic Engagement: Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in politically complex environments, with the credibility and contextual intelligence to build trusted relationships across government and institutional boundaries.
- Stakeholder Relationship Management: Strong track record of developing and managing influential networks with senior business and government stakeholders, including strategic business account management and cross-government collaboration.
- Communication & resilience: communicate clearly and openly, considering the needs of colleagues and stakeholders even under pressure. Lead meetings with stakeholders, explaining complex ideas and seek agreement where needed.

Working Patterns:
- Monday – Thursday 08:30 – 17:00, Friday 08:30 – 13:30
- Subject to Embassy flexible working policy
