As a Casual Chef, you will:
- Assist with food preparation and cooking under the direction of the Executive Chef.
- Contribute to menu planning, including adapting dishes for dietary needs and event themes.
- Support event service, such as plating, buffet setup, canapés, and presentation.
- Ensure food hygiene and safety standards are maintained in accordance with Embassy and FCDO guidelines.
- Collaborate effectively with a professional team in a fast-paced and high-profile environment.
- Maintain stock control for ingredients and equipment during events and assist with post-event clean down.
- Uphold confidentiality and professional conduct appropriate to diplomatic events and VIP guests.

- At least 1 year experience in a professional kitchen, ideally in fine dining, banqueting, or catering. Culinary school graduates with internship/placement experience are welcome
- Solid knowledge of food hygiene and safety (e.g., basic HACCP) and the ability to follow written standards and instructions

Working Conditions
Overview
- Zero-hours casual contract: shifts offered according to event schedules; no guaranteed minimum hours.
- Grooming and hygiene: Chefs are expected to maintain high standards at all times.
- Uniform: Chef’s jacket and apron will be provided as part of your role.
Details
- Normal Working Hours: Your hours of work will vary depending on the requirements of the Embassy and will be scheduled in line with the terms and conditions of employment for Country Based Staff in Japan and ensuring 7.5 hours per day and 37.5 hours per week.
- Normal Working Days: Your working days will vary depending on the requirements of the Embassy and will normally be scheduled between Mondays and Fridays.
- Break hour: A minimum break of 45 minutes if your working time exceeds six hours in a day.
- Non-working Days: Saturdays, Sundays; and Public Holidays as observed by the Mission
- Overtime: If, due to unavoidable circumstances, you work overtime beyond normal working hours with prior approval from your Line Manager, overtime premium will be applied in accordance with the Japanese Labour Standards Act.
- Assignment Notice: You will be informed of the required hours and working days before each assignment. This arrangement offers flexibility for both you and the Embassy while ensuring compliance with labour standards.
