Main purpose of job:
Working with the High Commissioner & the British High Commission
The High Commissioner puts a lot of trust in her drivers and this is a job with a lot of responsibility, including driving for VVIP visitors and seeing the High Commissioner’s schedule. You need to always maintain the highest level of discretion. You will need to understand and negotiate against the High Commissioner’s preferences and build good working relationships with police.
You will work closely with teams across the British High Commission. You will work most closely with the High Commissioner’s Private Office and the Transport Section. You need to communicate clearly with everyone and working well together important.
You will be expected to drive to the rules of the road and with the highest caution. You should accurately predict travel times and adjust to changes as needed. Sometimes you will need to conduct recces. You are responsible for ensuring that the High Commissioner is on time.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
- Complete all driving duties for the High Commissioner. This can also include driving for VIP and VVIP visitors and Chargé D’affaires.
- Understand and interpret the High Commissioner’s daily schedule, handling and adapting to last minute changes.
- Always maintain the highest level of discretion and build high level of trust with the High Commissioner.
- Communicate clearly and efficiently with the High Commissioner’s office, informing them of changes in travel times and providing accurate estimates of journeys and distances.
- Building strong working relationship with High Commissioner’s assigned Personal Protection officer.
- Understand High Commissioner’s driving preferences and delivery against these.
- Perform routine checks of vehicle in accordance with current policy and procedures
- Maintain accurate vehicle logs and journey records
- Keep the vehicle clean and serviceable and report any defences.
- Understand and maintain the passengers’ safety by providing safety briefs.
- Maintain the integrity and security of vehicles in your care.
- Ad hoc duties as assigned by your Line Manager, HC Office, or Head of VMU, including during crisis situations. For example, you may be required to support the rescue or evacuation of staff members who are stuck in vulnerable or high‑risk areas.
Technical
Follow all rules of the road (unless reacting to an emergency) including:
a. Maintaining sufficient manoeuvring space between you and the vehicle in front.
b. Utilise all vehicle driver training techniques
c. Observe national speed limits.
d. Maintain lane discipline – stay within road markings
e. To ensure vehicle is kept in a road worthy condition, including refuelling, lubricants checks, washer fluid checks, tyre checks, passenger compartment equipment serviceability checks (e.g. seat-belts, radio).
f. Complete all associated logs, documents and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
g. Report any defect immediately to the Transport Manager.
h. Escort the vehicle at the dealer as necessary during servicing / repair.
i. Wear the officially provided uniform and be presentable.

Essential on arrival:
1. Formal qualification is not a requirement, however, good spoken English and understand is expected.
2. To be formally qualified to drive, and in possession of a valid Indian commercial driving licence for the required vehicles.
3. To have at least 2 years’ experience of light and heavy vehicle, including driving a wide range of cars.
4. Experience working in an international setting, diplomatic or UN mission.

For British High Commission candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.
For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 36,686 per month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation. There will be additional allowances of 8% Shift Allowance and 8% Responsibility Allowance (subject to review)
Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family which includes self, spouse/partner and children up to an age of 23 years and irrespective of age, only if with, physical or mental disability.
No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided. FCDO does not pay for any travelling, accommodation & relocation expenses incurred and/or accept any financial risk, including cancellation or reschedule costs
Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
