Who are we:
The British High Commission (BHC) in Malta is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit an Economic and Global Affairs Officer.
The objective of the British High Commission in Malta is to build the strongest possible UK-Malta partnership to advance shared values, counter common threats, and protect our citizens.
Malta and the UK share a long and warm historical relationship which forms the basis of our modern partnership. Malta’s strategic location on Europe’s southern frontier and status as an international trade and financial centre make it a partner for UK efforts to confront transnational organised crime, illicit finance and irregular migration.
As an EU Member State and member of the Commonwealth, we work together in a range of fora and across multiple shared priorities. The Foreign Secretary and Maltese Foreign Minister signed a Bilateral Co-operation Framework (BCF) in February 2023 which agreed an ambitious range of joint work. This was reinforced by a UK-Malta Joint Statement on bilateral co-operation in November 2025.
You will be part of the dynamic High Commission Political Team, working to achieve the UK’s objectives in Malta. You will primarily lead on Economics & Trade, Climate, and Human Rights & Values but there is a requirement for flexibility as priorities shift. You will also be expected to assist with wider events, visits and projects when required, enabling you to gain exposure to the breadth of work across the High Commission.
Roles and responsibilities:
Economic/Trade: 50%
You will build a network of influential Business and Economic stakeholders in Malta. You will support senior official engagement with senior leaders and interlocutors. You will use your organisational skills to maintain a variety of strategic engagement tools and respond in a timely manner to queries. Key tasks include:
- Providing analysis of and reporting on the Maltese economy
- Identifying and reporting trade opportunities in Malta to regional colleagues in the UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT). Being the point of contact for British and Maltese companies.
- Develop and lead on events, workshops, visits and projects to promote UK-Malta trade links and build business connections in support of UK growth agenda.
Climate: 10%
Supporting delivery of UK climate and environment priorities including:
- Renewable energy e.g. offshore wind
- Green technology, green finance
- Priority climate cooperation e.g. UN COP Process
Human Rights: 10%
Analysing and reporting on Human Rights issues, in support of UK objectives in Malta. Working with Maltese stakeholders on shared human rights priorities including around gender, LGBT+, and Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict (PSVI)
Support: 30%
Provide general support for the Political Team: supporting high level visits, organising events, managing contacts and responding to correspondence. Cover in other areas of the Mission such as communications, defence or High Commissioner’s Office as and when required e.g. during absences.
These objectives and the percentage of time spent on each one may shift as priorities change. The successful candidate should be flexible and able to change focus as and when needed.

Our ideal candidate shows:
- fluency at C1 level in English, according to CEFR*.
- Professional experience of working in a similar role.
- Experience working on Economic and trade issues, or a keen interest in this area (e.g. having a Degree in Economic or related field of studies).
- Self-starter with ability to work well in a team and independently.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Strong organisational and IT skills.
- Ability to build relationships with key contacts, including at senior levels.
- Problem solving skills and an ability to work under pressure.
- Agility and flexibility to meet changing demands.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract of 12 months with possibility of extension.
