The British Embassy in Rome is part of a global diplomatic network representing the UK’s political, economic and consular interests and is now looking for a Communication, Outreach and Digital Assistant.
The Communication, Outreach and Digital Assistant will support the Press and Public Affairs team, working closely with colleagues across the Embassy and wider UK Government network. The role contributes directly to delivery of the Italy Country Business Plan by providing timely news monitoring, supporting outreach and stakeholder engagement, and creating high-quality digital content that communicates UK priorities to Italian audiences. As part of a collaborative and fast-paced team, the jobholder will work with key internal and external stakeholders, gain experience across major Embassy programmes, and have access to learning and development opportunities in communications, digital skills, and engagement, with strong support from colleagues.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Digital Content Creation:
- Support the Digital and Brand Manager in developing engaging digital content for UKinItaly social media channels, including copywriting, visual assets, and multimedia editing (photo, audio and video).
- Ensure content is consistent with brand guidelines and suited to Italian audiences.
Media Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Daily monitoring of Italian and international media, producing clear summaries and assessing relevance and potential influence.
- Evaluate major communication activities at post, including press coverage and social media performance, contributing to evidence-based planning.
Website Management:
- Serve as the Embassy’s website editor, ensuring content is accurate, timely and aligned with UK Government communication standards.
Team Administration and Budget Support:
- Provide core administrative support to the Press and Public Affairs team, including travel and training arrangements, event logistics and general organisational tasks.
- Maintain and update the Press and Public Affairs contacts database.
- Manage digital subscriptions and support financial planning for communication activities
Outreach, Events and Campaign Delivery:
- Contribute to planning and delivery of Embassy public diplomacy campaigns, events, and – when required – support official visits linked to His Majesty’s Government objectives in Italy.
- Assist with stakeholder engagement, ensuring effective coordination across internal teams and external partners.
Corporate and Crisis Responsibilities:
- Hold a corporate and/or crisis preparedness objective, contributing to the Embassy crisis structure or wider Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office corporate agenda (e.g., Network Groups, Committees, or cross-Mission initiatives).

- Excellent written and spoken English and Italian, equivalent to C1 or above of the Common European Framework* or equivalent.
- Experience and proven skills in video and photo editing.
- At least six months of experience in visits and events management, including in multilingual environments.
- Experience of managing diverse and relationships with senior colleagues.
- Degree level equivalent in a relevant field (e.g. communications, international relations, political sciences).
- Knowledge of the UK political environment and of the Italian political, cultural and media landscape.
- Cross-team working experience.

This is a full-time, 12 months fixed-term position, graded AO according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2,846.07. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including €10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.
Working hours are 35 hours (net) per week Monday to Friday typically from 09.00 – 17.00, with some flexibility. Please note that remote working is extremely limited, due to the nature of the position.
The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a 4 months probationary period. The starting date may be delayed depending on circumstances at the time and this will be agreed with the selected candidate.
All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.
