The British Embassy in Vienna is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit one Intern for the Nuclear Team, UK Mission to the UN in Vienna.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in the team promoting UK values and policies at the United Nations and other International Organisations within the UK’s Mission to the UN in Vienna (UKMis). The successful candidate will support in planning and delivering the UK delegation’s participation at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s September Board of Governors and General Conference, working closely with diplomats, policymakers and senior officials from across government at one of the busiest times in the Mission’s calendar. The post provides hands on exposure to multilateral diplomacy, including negotiations, ministerial programmes and high-level bilateral engagements, offering a unique insight into how the UK advances its priorities on the global stage, as well as international nuclear policy.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The role will provide essential administrative and policy support during a peak period of delivery for the UKMis Nuclear Team, contributing to the effective preparation and delivery of UK engagement at the IAEA Board of Governors and General Conference. Key skills include organisational ability, strong written communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
- IAEA General Conference and Board Preparation & Coordination: Working with UKMis Vienna and cross‑HMG colleagues to plan, coordinate and support the participation of the UK delegation at the IAEA Board of Governors and General Conference (GC). This includes assisting with timelines, coordination tools, and preparations to support effective UK engagement at these key multilateral meetings across the nuclear security, safety, and safeguards files (e.g. Iran and Ukraine).
- Senior‑Level Programmes and Visits Support: Supporting the development and delivery of programmes for incoming Ministers, Heads of Delegation, the UK Permanent Representative and other senior UK officials for the Board of Governors and GC. This includes assisting with the organisation of bilateral meetings with other delegations and supporting the smooth running of senior‑level engagements during conference periods.
- Briefing and Policy Support: Working with UK-based policy leads and UKMis colleagues to help assemble high‑quality briefing packs and planning materials for senior UK officials. This includes collating inputs, editing drafts, and supporting the timely provision of clear and accurate briefing to inform UK participation in meetings and negotiations.
- Logistical, Events and Delegation Support: Providing logistical and organisational support to the UK delegation, including support to conference logistics and the delivery of UK‑hosted or UK‑supported events alongside the General Conference and related meetings.
- Communications and Negotiations Support: Supporting communications activity related to the conferences, including preparing content for external communications in coordination with UK-based and UKMis communications colleagues, and providing support to colleagues in the Nuclear Team on negotiations on outcome documents and/or resolutions, including attendance at relevant sessions and helping coordination of UK positions.
The role holder may be asked to work flexibly across the Mission to support wider business objectives.

This is an internship country based staff position at the British Embassy in Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.
This is a full-time (35 hours per week) internship fixed-term contract until 30th September 2026 with an expected start date of 1st July.
Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year prorated for months worked in the role. The Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance. Flexible working is supported, within operational constraints and in line with the flexible working policy.
The salary will be €1,800 gross. You will receive your salary minus social insurance deductions and are expected to comply with Austrian tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Austrian authorities. However, in some cases you will receive an abated salary where dual taxation agreements apply. Further information will be given at the recruitment stage.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Austrian employment law.
Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Austria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
