Overview

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through the GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) Indonesia, is currently implementing the project entitled The Global Support Initiative for Indigenous Peoples and Community-Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCA-GSI) Phase 2. Under this initiative, GEF-SGP Indonesia invites Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Indigenous Peoples Organizations, and local community groups working to strengthen the recognition and protection of Indigenous Peoples’ and Local Communities’ conserved territories and areas to participate in the grant selection process.

The programme is funded by the Government of Germany through the German Federal Ministry of the Environment International Climate Initiative (BMUV IKI) and implemented through a cost-sharing mechanism aligned with GEF-SGP Indonesia Phase 7 under the Direct Implementation Modality (DIM) mechanism managed by UNDP at the global level. This Call for Proposals provides opportunities for local partners supporting the programme objectives and priority landscapes of GEF-SGP Indonesia Phase 7.

The objective of this grant programme is to support initiatives and actions of civil society, Indigenous Peoples, and Local Communities in contributing to Targets 3, 21, 22, and 23 of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), particularly focusing on:

  • Recognition and protection of Indigenous Peoples’ and Local Communities’ conserved territories and areas
  • Strengthening community-based conservation governance systems
  • Enhancing biodiversity conservation through Indigenous and local knowledge systems
  • Promoting effective participation of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in biodiversity governance

In its implementation, ICCA-GSI Phase 2 will prioritize support in the following landscapes and areas:

  • Bodri Watershed (DAS Bodri), Central Java
  • Balantieng Watershed (DAS Balantieng), South Sulawesi
  • Nantu Wildlife Reserve, Gorontalo
  • Sabu Raijua Island, East Nusa Tenggara
  • Other potential areas with significant biodiversity values

The programme encourages activities related to participatory mapping and documentation of ICCAs, strengthening customary governance systems, agroecology and agroforestry development, biodiversity-friendly community forest management, traditional knowledge documentation, ecosystem restoration, community-based ecotourism, green livelihoods, and inclusive participation of women and youth in natural resource governance.
