The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its – Mandate Design and Product Development Department – Thematic & Advisory Division (T&A) Division – Sustainability Unit at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Sustainable Finance Officer*. This is a full-time role (limited travelling required) at functional grade 4 for which the EIF offers a permanent contract.

Purpose
Part of the EIB Group, the mission of the European Investment Fund (EIF) is to improve access to finance for SMEs and small mid-caps in Europe. We do this by supporting emerging and established fund managers with equity investments and by designing debt financing instruments that share the risk taken by financial institutions when they lend to or invest in small businesses. We bring this support closer to entrepreneurs through our extensive network of partners and financial intermediaries in all EU Member States and associated countries.
The Sustainability Unit sits in the Thematic & Advisory Division of the Investment Office Directorate. It is the team centralising all policies, sectorial expertise, thematic analysis, eligibility assessment and business development related to the climate and sustainability thematic at large. In particular, it is responsible for implementing the EIB Group’s Climate Bank Roadmap at the EIF, ensuring effective implementation of climate action, environmental sustainability, and Paris alignment across all operations.
Operating network
In this role, you will help drive the rollout of the EIB Group’s Climate Bank Roadmap at the EIF, ensuring that climate action, environmental sustainability, and Paris alignment are fully embedded across all operations. A key part of the job is to design and oversee the green framework for all EIF products (debt and equity), while tracking progress toward the EIB Group’s climate and environmental objectives. You will also contribute to developing innovative advisory tools, working closely with EIB Advisory to support climate‑related product development.
Given the diversity of projects and tasks, the role requires close collaboration across the EIF and the EIB. You will work closely with internal colleagues and act as a key counterpart to EIB services on sustainable finance topics. This position offers a unique opportunity to combine technical expertise, innovation and strategic influence to further strengthen the EIF’s role in green finance.

Responsibilities
In your role, you will:
Support the rollout of existing climate products, including by promoting initiatives to improve deployment capacity and performance;
Help design new financial instruments and mandates targeting climate and sustainability, in particular in the context of the next EU Multi Annual Financial Framework;
In cooperation with the EIB, ensure that the Climate Bank Roadmap and related principles are well established within the EIF and embedded into all business lines, with clear communication and follow-up with all services involved;
Perform sectorial analysis on specific topics, such as cleantech, climate adaptation, critical raw materials, circular economy etc;
Act as go-to person for EIF services for advice/interpretation of eligibility criteria, Group policies or applications of EU regulations;
Share expertise on green finance regulations and engage with regulators;
Collaborate with EIB services for harmonised approach on eligibility and frameworks of climate products;
Contributing in building networks with policymakers and industry stakeholders;
Represent EIF in relevant forums.
Qualifications
University degree, preferable at post-graduate level, in finance, economics, environmental sciences, climate or sustainability-related disciplines, or related subjects.
At least 3 and no more than 5 years of post-graduation (after having obtained your initial university diploma) relevant experience in climate policy, sustainable finance product design, sustainability-related investment product development or financial instruments structuring, ideally within an asset manager, fund promoter, investment platform, or debt financial institution.
Deep understanding of the EU Sustainable Finance Framework, including SFDR, EU Taxonomy (eligibility/alignment), CSRD data implications, and related disclosure obligations.
Experience structuring and designing green or sustainable financial products, such as thematic funds, climate transition strategies, or sustainable financial guarantee instruments.
Familiarity with ESG data providers and methodologies.
Ability to interpret ESG datasets and integrate them into product features such as exclusions, thresholds, impact metrics, climate KPIs, or engagement objectives.
Ability to translate regulatory requirements into operational and product design guidance, including drafting investment guidelines, product KPIs, and sustainability disclosures.
Ability to prepare concise analytical position papers, internal notes, and decision documents for senior management.
Knowledge of EIB Group financial products is highly desirable.
Excellent command of English (spoken and written); knowledge of other EU languages is an asset.
Strong organizational and analytical skills and ability to manage multiple workstreams.
Ability to analyse large quantities of information quickly and produce clear, concise executive summaries, memos, or briefing materials. Knowledge of advanced data analysis tools would be an advantage.
