Background The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and UN-Habitat are implementing an Adaptation Fund project entitled “Increasing the resilience of both displaced persons and host communities to climate change-related water challenges.” Led by UN-Habitat, the project aims to improve the response to climate change impacts on the availability of water resources to displaced persons and their host communities in Lebanon and Jordan. ESCWA is responsible for implementing the regional knowledge management, advocacy, and communications component of the project. General Objectives Under this project, the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) and UN-Habitat / Jordan work to expand knowledge on water efficient urban agriculture through the development of permaculture demonstration sites and training modules. The main objective of this project component is to “show students and farmers that through this [permaculture] approach water and resources can be used efficiently, making it a replicable business case. It will also increase crop diversity and productivity.” As the project draws to a close in 2026, there is a need to support the sustainability of the knowledge gained with respect to permaculture at the community level. A two-day permaculture training workshop will be hosted at the Greening the Desert project site in South Shuneh, Jordan to strengthen knowledge transfer regionally and locally. Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and the overall supervision of the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster Lead, the consultant is responsible for two sets of deliverables: 1- Develop a permaculture training workshop structure, content and materials that introduce the fundamentals of permaculture through interactive and on-site training tools. The content should be appropriate for the on-site delivery to a group of up to 20 participants. 2- Implement a permaculture training workshop for up to 20 participants from across the Arab region, providing them with interactive training sessions and materials furing a two-day workshop and the Greening the Desert site in South Shuneh, Jordan.
A Master’s degree or equivalent in environmental, agricultural, or related fields is required. Demonstrated training in permaculture is desirable. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. Note: All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in sustainable agriculture and permaculture in the Arab region is required. Experience in designing and delivering training material on permaculture is required. A minimum of two years of work with international organizations and/or UN agencies is desirable. Work experience in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly with national and municipal counterparts, is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand).
