Main purpose of job:
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the UK Government department responsible for promoting trade and investment globally. As the department for economic growth, DBT supports businesses to export, invest and scale internationally, helping to create jobs and opportunities across the UK.
Through its global network, based in British Embassies, DBT plays a key role in delivering the UK’s trade and investment ambitions. Working at the intersection of business, policy and diplomacy, DBT teams collaborate with UK and international stakeholders to generate commercial opportunities, improve market access and build long-term partnerships.
The Latin America and Caribbean (LATAC) network, led by His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner, manages the UK’s trade and investment relationship across the region, including Mexico. Within this context, the DBT team at the British Embassy in Mexico City supports UK exports and promotes investment across priority sectors aligned with the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy.
This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting trade promotion, market access and investment activities across priority campaigns, including education, Life Sciences, Financial Services, Food & Drink, Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Energy and Water.
As an intern, you will work closely with the team to support a range of commercial activities. This includes contributing to market research, stakeholder engagement and the organisation of events and trade missions. You will also gain exposure to high-level engagements and international trade initiatives, developing a strong understanding of how trade policy and commercial activity are delivered in practice.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Support the commercial team, mainly Food & Drink and Financial Services Campaigns.
- Assist the team on commercial missions, visits and events that are planned for the year.
- Be able to analyse commercial reports to provide feedback to British companies interested in Mexico.
- Update information on the sectors (one pagers, databases, calendars, pipelines, tracking system).
- Conduct research and provide a professional analysis to companies interested in the market.
- Prepare news briefings to the commercial team with relevant information regarding the trends in Mexico.
- Liaise with stakeholders and relevant contacts.
- Support marketing activities when needed.
- Engage with colleagues and stakeholders in Mexico, the wider LATAC region and the UK to deliver projects and events.
- Write reports in English and Spanish.

Essential on arrival:
- The applicant must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme or recently graduated (e.g. International Relations, Economics, Administration, International Business, Engineering on relevant field, etc.).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in both languages.
- Understanding of the full range of MS Office suite including Outlook, PowerPoint and Word.
- Confident in dealing with a range of contacts at all levels.
- Organised and efficient in work and time management.
- A positive and flexible team player who is willing to contribute to the team’s overall objectives.
- Able to deal with a range of competing priorities in a calm, efficient and professional manner, with a keen eye for detail.

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right at time of application.

The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Working Patterns
