Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy in Mexico is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Assistant Political Officer supports the work of the Foreign Policy team, aiming to advance the UK Government’s priorities overseas. We want to ensure good relations between the UK and Mexico, maintain dialogue on the most important geopolitical issues, and ultimately contribute to making the UK – and the world – safer and more prosperous. The jobholder will contribute to political reporting and analysis on foreign policy, as well as being responsible for the section’s core administrative tasks.
Roles and responsibilities:
The role provides policy and administrative support to the Foreign Policy team, and to the wider political section as necessary.
Policy Support:
• Research on foreign policy topics.
• Monitoring and reporting on foreign policy issues as necessary and supporting reporting from colleagues.
• Attend external events on behalf of the embassy, reporting on developments.
• Curating biographies, translating texts, preparing lobbying requests and Note Verbales.
Administration:
• Organising external meetings with stakholders, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
• Organising events, including collating guest lists, receiving guests, event logistics, financial management and dealing with suppliers.
• Support the implementation of projects by organising activities, processing payments and reporting.
• Support the organisation of high level visits, including securing venues, booking flights and hotels, organising transport, protocol, catering, etc.
• Note taking of meetings, assigning and following up on actions.
• Other administrative support as required.
This is a busy team and the jobholder will need to work flexibly on foreign policy and provide general administrative support to the wider political team when required.
This role requires high quality written and oral communication in English and Spanish, a passion for foreign policy, a knowledge of the Mexican government and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment whilst maintaining attention to detail. You will need to be comfortable dealing with external stakeholders, managing expectations and communicating clearly.
Increasingly, we make use of Artificial Intelligence to support our work and diplomatic efforts. You will need to use AI to support research tasks and to explore using AI to automate existing processes, making the work of the political section as efficient as possible.
This role is suited to someone at the start of their career in international relations who has sound experience in political analysis and report writing.
