Main purpose of job
The British Government’s Consulate-General in Toronto has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and detail-oriented person to join our busy Consular Team as Consular Officer. Reporting to the Consular Manager in Toronto, the successful applicant will play a key role in front-line service delivery. The main purpose of the role is to provide consular assistance in accordance with current guidelines, including organising and delivering citizenship ceremonies and processing travel documents. There will be the opportunity to provide assistance to British nationals needing help.
This opportunity is a rewarding role which supports and further develops the relationship between the UK and Canada, working at the forefront of supporting our priority in assisting British Nationals in distress.
The ideal candidate will be an active member of the Americas Consular Network and demonstrate strong teamwork and communication skills, both written and verbal. They will possess exceptional attention to detail, sound judgment and common sense, while remaining calm under pressure and adapting quickly to changing priorities and diverse case types.
Roles and responsibilities
- Providing consular assistance in accordance with current policies.
- Keeping the Consular Manager informed of developments in cases.
- Management and processing of emergency travel document applications.
- Maintenance of electronic case files.
- Arranging Citizenship Ceremonies.
- Maintaining close links with local authorities including, but not limited to law enforcement, correctional facilities, medical examiners, hospitals, morgues, mental health facilities and airlines.
- Contribute to the wider work of crisis handling.
- Any other duties as assigned including exceptionally participate in call-out arrangements for emergency cases out of hours.

- Minimum of three years’ relevant professional experience, including direct engagement with members of the public in a client-facing environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong customer service and stakeholder management skills.
- Proven ability to handle sensitive personal information with discretion, confidentiality, empathy, and professionalism, while interacting with clients and colleagues in a respectful, non-judgmental manner.
- Sound judgement, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to exercise initiative when managing complex or sensitive matters.
- High levels of personal resilience, emotional intelligence, and empathy, particularly when supporting individuals experiencing difficult or distressing circumstances.
- Demonstrated self-motivation and the ability to work independently, while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands and effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams.
- A valid driver’s licence and willingness to use a personal vehicle for official duties, with eligible expenses reimbursed in accordance with policy.
- Must be legally authorised to work in Canada.

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Canada.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Working patterns
This is an in-person, part-time role (25 hours per week), Monday to Friday, 09:00-14:00. Occasional work outside standard hours may be required during crisis situations, and limited regional travel may be necessary.
