The British Embassy in Copenhagen is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking for an exceptional Vice Consul to join our Consular Team and help deliver vital support to British nationals when they need it most.
This is a unique opportunity to combine leadership, stakeholder engagement and operational delivery in a role that has a direct and meaningful impact on people’s lives. You will lead consular operations in Denmark, provide operational oversight of support in Latvia, and play an important role in strengthening collaboration across the Nordics, Baltics and Ireland Network (NBDN).
Whether supporting a family through a bereavement, responding to a crisis affecting British nationals overseas, or leading innovative regional projects, no two days are the same.
As Vice Consul, you will:
- Manage and develop the Consular Pro Consul Officer in Copenhagen, providing leadership, coaching and support to deliver a high-quality and responsive consular service
- Provide line management and operational oversight for the Consular Officer in Latvia, fostering collaboration and consistency across locations.
- Deliver high-quality consular services for British nationals in Denmark, including oversight of fee-bearing services such as Emergency Travel Documents and Citizenship Ceremonies.
- Manage complex and sensitive consular cases involving vulnerable British nationals, including cases related to bereavement, hospitalisation, crime, detention, mental health concerns, domestic abuse, sexual offences and destitution.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local authorities, emergency services, welfare organisations and other key partners to support effective consular assistance and crisis response.
- Lead outreach and preventative activity to help British nationals stay informed, prepared and safe while living in or visiting Denmark.
- Coordinate preparedness planning and response arrangements for crises and major incidents affecting British nationals.
- Act as the Embassy’s primary point of contact for Honorary Consuls across Denmark.
- Manage a regional NBDN portfolio, contributing to initiatives that strengthen collaboration, resilience, operational flexibility and capability across the region.
- Work closely with colleagues across the wider NBDN, EuroAsia Consular Network and FCDO Consular Directorate to support regional priorities and share best practice.

Our ideal candidate shows:
- fluency at C1 level in English and Danish, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*);
- At least three years’ relevant professional experience, including working with the public and managing staff;
- Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgement and the ability to remain calm under pressure, including when supporting distressed or vulnerable individuals;
- Proven people management experience and a collaborative approach to teamwork;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Proactivity, adaptability and resiliencen, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment;
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications and AI tools.

What we offer:
- This is a full time, permanent contract subject to a 3-month probation period;
- 37.5-hours working week with a focus on work-life balance, this role is primarily office-based. Flexible working from home of 1-2 days may be possible, subject to line manager agreement.
