General function

Internews is seeking an Editorial Consultant for Aswatouna project one of our programs in Iraq to empower women to participate equally as citizens and decision-makers by strengthening and expanding women’s voices in Iraq. The editorial consultant will provide support to writers and lead editorial process to improve contents, monitors and evaluates the reach and quality of Internews’ Iraq editorial activities.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Provide editorial support and guidance on content production in the project.
  • Review project contents, story, video audio…etc. productions and ensure it matches the core standards of Human Rights.
  • Manage the story grants programs, including overseeing selection process, working with grantees, monitoring their progress, reviewing, and distributing their final stories.
  • The editor is responsible for approving contents production and send it to social media officer to be published on project FB page.
  • Others relevant duties as assigned.

Typical Duties:

  • Read contents with a gender lens and make sure that the text follows the core standard of human rights.
  • Review story contents according to the publication style and editorial policy.
  • Consider culture diversity in the country when reviewing the contents and evaluate submissions from writers to decide what to be published.
  • Read contents and correct spelling, punctuation & grammar errors.
  • Support writers to re-write the text to make their ideas clear and understandable for readers.
  • Verify facts cited in material for publication.
  • Approve final version submitted for publication.

Key Qualifications:

  • Have a strong gender background.
  • Fluency in Arabic & Kurdish & good command in English.
  • Bachelor level degree required in gender professional, journalism, Master degree is preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of editorial professional and five (5) years’ experience working on gender focus areas.
  • Strong writing and copy-editing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving and analytical skills required.
  • Ability to work well with others, meet deadlines, and respond to changes in priorities.
