Project Description:
The African Programming and Research Initiative to End Slavery (APRIES) at the University of Georgia in the US is seeking a consultant with expertise in French-English and English-French translation (legal and general) and interpretation (general). APRIES manages a grant from the U.S. Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons to estimate and measurably reduce the prevalence of child trafficking in Guinea and Senegal.
APRIES seeks a translator-interpreter to:
· Translate legal documents related to human trafficking subject matter from French into English
· Translate legal documents related to grants and contracts administration from English into French
· Translate other formal program documents from French into English, and English into French
· Provide occasional conference or formal meeting interpretation services
These activities will take place in collaboration with APRIES. In addition to having extensive experience translating legal documents from French-English and English-French and interpreting in both directions, the consultant should ideally be experienced working in the Francophone West African context. Prior experience with human trafficking subject matter is also desired.
For each prospective consultant, APRIES requests a resume/curriculum vitae and a letter outlining the candidate’s relevant skills and experience.
Length of Consultancy: The consultancy begins in May 2021 and ends in September 2024. However, this timeline may change due to external contingencies.
Requirements:
· Expertise in translating legal documents from French to English and from English to French, with at least 5-7 years of experience
· Expertise interpreting at meetings and conferences, with at least 5-7 years of experience
· Degree in translation/interpretation or equivalent experience
· Experience working in settings with government and NGO stakeholders
· Excellent writing skills
· Strong attention to detail
· Ability to work under tight deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience translating documents in the Francophone West African context
· Experience interpreting meetings and conferences in the Francophone West African context
· Experience with human trafficking subject matter
· Certification from a recognized translator association
· Certification from a recognized interpreter association
