Background
Vitamin supplementation is among the world’s largest preventive public health service delivery programs – reaching more than 250 million children every year. Annually, the oil-based supplement saves hundred-of-thousands of lives. The Nutrition Section at UNICEF Headquarters leads the collection of administrative data and coverage estimation through collaboration with, governments UNICEF country offices, and partners. In collaboration with academic partners, UNICEF nutrition is also advancing analysis focusing on mortality, lives saved and strengthening of systems for delivery of nutrition and health services.
Purpose and objectives:
The micronutrient supplementation team in UNICEF have identified opportunities for students to obtain practical experience generating, analyzing, and presenting nutrition data in innovative, creative, and impactful ways. This work will support the dissemination of key findings at the global, regional, and country level and key partners.
Objectives of the Internship
- To gain practical experience in analysis of nutrition data relating to vitamin A supplementation and other micronutrients.
- To develop skills in data visualization and communication aimed at internal and external stakeholders and partners.
- To acquire and practice skills in designing and applying data collection tools aimed at addressing gaps in existing data.
- To draft analytical reports, PowerPoint slide decks, and infographics.
- To gain exposure to UNICEF’s organizational and working environment.
Activities
- Under the guidance and direction of specialists within the HQ Nutrition Section, undertake analysis focusing on micronutrient data and country experiences.
- Draft and finalize data collection tools, i.e. questionnaires and interview guides to address data gaps.
- Develop draft reports to document practices and approaches, building on data analysis
- Draft visual products, including PowerPoint slide decks and infographics, illustrations, short videos etc.
- Provide support in the development of key messages to correspond with visual products for different audiences.
Qualifications
Candidates wishing to apply must meet the eligibility requirements stipulated on UNICEF’s website found here.
- Be enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant graduate degree program, for example epidemiology, public health, medical statistics etc.
- Experience and strong skills in qualitative and quantitative analytics.
- Ability to be creative and generate compelling data visualizations, infographics, illustrations etc., based on content from nutrition data, analyses, and reports.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, initiative, focus on identifying solutions, and willingness to learn.
- Excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
- Additional consideration will be given to any past professional experience.
- Knowledge of relevant computer software such as MS Office, relevant data analysis software such as Stata.
Expected Academic and Professional Outputs
- Enhanced skills in data analysis, writing and drafting visual products for advocacy on improving nutrition outcomes of children.
- Increased knowledge of primary health care (PHC) and health system strengthening.
- Familiarity with the objectives, structure, and activities of UNICEF’s Nutrition Section.
- Attendance in internal UNICEF seminars, meetings, lectures, and workshops at UNICEF.
Duration
- This will be a full-time internship; its duration will be for two months and may be remote or in New York.
Salary/Payment:
In accordance to UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend of US $1,700 per month. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.
Insurance:
UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work with the Nutrition Section.
Living Conditions and Working Environment:
The intern can be remote based and work from home. S/he will work with the Nutrition Section and report to the supervisor of this internship. S/he is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern will be expected to participate in nutrition section meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest.
