The Program

Australia Awards Papua New Guinea (AAPNG) is designed to promote knowledge, leadership and enduring ties between Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG). It aims to build knowledge and skills to address PNG’s economic and development challenges through international scholarships to Australia and scholarships in PNG.

It offers the next generation of leaders in Papua New Guinea opportunities to acquire professional and technical knowledge and skills relevant to the priorities of the Government of PNG. The program ensures opportunities are provided for women, people with disabilities and people from remote locations. The program focuses on supporting alumni to use their skills, knowledge and networks to drive change and innovation.

AAPNG includes three study options:

  • Australia Award Scholarships for Papua New Guineans to study primarily postgraduate courses in Australia;
  • Australia Awards Short Course Awards – for Papua New Guineans to undertake study in Australia, receiving an Australian qualification; and
  • Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships for Papua New Guineans to study in PNG to meet critical workforce gaps.

To deliver Australia Awards outcomes, AAPNG has five stream activities: Australia Awards; PNG and Pacific Awards; Short Course Awards; Alumni Engagement; and Secondary Schools. AAPNG is managed by Coffey, a Tetra Tech company, on behalf of the Australian Government.

The Position

The Academic Adviser will be part of a pool of PNG-based academic advisers who can deliver professional services on a short-term basis to Australia Awards research awardees (masters by research, Master of Philosophy and PhD). Based on their area of expertise, the academic adviser is expected to provide the following high-level inputs:

  • Develop, design, facilitate and manage a writing retreat for Australia Awards research awardees, including providing guidance on and assessment of writing outputs at the end of the retreat.
  • Read, review and provide constructive criticism and expert advice on content and structure of writing outputs of awardees in reasonable time.
  • Provide structural editing support to awardees guided by the Australian standards for editing practice which defines structural editing as “assessing and shaping material to improve its organisation and content. It is editing to clarify meaning, improve flow and smooth language.”
  • Provide expert advice in design, planning and implementation of conferences, workshops and other appropriate fora to promote and wider dissemination of AAS research awardee outputs.
  • Provide general academic advice and guidance in response to specific requests to inform the Australia Awards Scholarships team and DFAT (as requested).

The Person

  • Postgraduate tertiary qualifications on the adviser’s area of specialisation;
  • Five years or more teaching/supervising students/conducting research in higher education;
  • Five years or more experience in academic editing, writing and publication
  • Strong academic publication history
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, advisory and management skills
  • High level strategic thinking;
  • High level inter-personal skills for building and maintaining relationships, delivering messages and identifying and managing issues;
  • High level proficiency in presentation, communication and report writing skills;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
