The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute of Human Virology (IHV), is currently seeking an Accounting Manager to develop and maintain simple and complex financial models that show the sources and use of funds for the overall financials for the Institute and then forecast for the same.

Essential Functions:
- Monthly, updates overall financial projections of discretionary funds, analyzes variances, and disseminates information to key stakeholders. Work within tight deadlines to analyze and provide basic forecasts for areas such as salaries, fringe benefits, indirect cost recoveries, state funds, revolving funds, grants and contracts, fund balances, and other areas as needed. Review and analyze all University assigned financial accounts and expenditures to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies in order to make accurate year-end revenue, expense, and surplus/deficit projections.
- Prepares Institute budget of discretionary funds.
- Monthly, prepares summary level financial schedules that capture financial data for grants and non-grant funds. Prepare, and distribute accurate, concise, well-organized, and timely financial reports, presentations, and financial information to stakeholders including Institute leadership and Institute PI’s.
- Quarterly, forecasts discretionary budgets for the upcoming years.
- Maintain and manage an archive of budget and financial data files that can quickly be accessed and manipulated to generate the needed financial information.
- Represents the Institute through participation in campus meetings and special projects.
- Performance special projects related to analysis of complex grants and clinical trials.
- Administers and maintains assigned accounts to verify accuracy of transactions and uniform application of policies, procedures, and acceptable standards.
- Receives, analyzes, adjusts, and prepares various internal/external financial ledgers, schedules, exhibits and summaries along with any assigned databases utilized for financial reporting.
- Duties may include increased complexity, independence, and responsibility, as well as additional supervisory requirements such as incumbent training, performance management, and quality assurance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration. Masters in related field preferred.
Experience: Four (4) years of accounting related experience using general acceptable accounting principles. Prior work experience with international grants preferred.
Supervisory Experience: One (1) year of direct management involved in recruitment, training, and professional development of staff.
Credit history review may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of best practices in the field as well as all relevant federal, state, and local rules, regulations, and programs/policies for meeting compliance.
- Ability to analyze, compare and interpret facts and figures and make sound judgment based upon this knowledge.
- Ability to clearly communicate results of work both orally and in writing to clients and management.
- Ability to cooperate and work with others to strengthen and cultivate relationships.
- Ability to carry out multiple assignments and plan accordingly to meet scheduled deadlines.
- Self-starter who can manage a list of tasks and communicate results.
- Use of various relevant computer word processing and spreadsheet packages.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent communication written and oral communication skills in English.
