Context
Turquoise Mountain’s Built Heritage team in Jordan is working on building projects in traditional and modern materials on the Umm Qais Archaeological Site in Irbid Governorate, Jordan. We work with skilled and unskilled workers from the local community on specific training and building projects. We are looking for a building professional with skill and interest in practical, on-site and project delivery. The right candidate will be overseeing the work on site, implementing the designs of the architectural designers. Reporting to the Project Architects we need a Site Assistant to help with all aspects of delivering our building projects – from acting as foreman overseeing the work, to coordinating workers or helping with receiving deliveries – on both historic and new buildings. The successful candidates’ specific day-to-day responsibility will include:
Roles and Responsibilities
• Assisting the architecture team as instructed e.g., site surveys, marking out etc.
• Opening and closing the project site and carrying out work team roll call
• Keeping records and documenting as instructed of attendance, deliveries, processes etc.
• Checking tools and equipment, maintaining storage rooms & updating inventories
• Carrying out safety checks on site and making sure safety is adhered to on site
• Implementing all work on site & monitoring progress on the site as instructed
• Writing and photographing for reports and site updates as directed
• Assisting with material and equipment procurement as needed
• Speaking to visitors and tourists if asked in English and/or Arabic
• Joining meetings with stakeholders on the Umm Qais Archaeological Site
• Assisting with managing the construction team (e.g. Enforcing rules, managing behavior etc.)
• Assisting with recruitment of the construction team as instructed
• Translating from Arabic to English and vice-versa in spoken and written form as instructed
• Assisting with any other tasks as instructed by the Director of Built Heritage
Qualifications and Requirements
• Degree/diploma in Building Construction, Structural Engineering and/or Architecture
• Unqualified applicants will be considered but need to have demonstrable practical experience
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience based on practical, on-site work
• Experience or interest in working with traditional and modern building details, delivering building projects on site and managing design and building work teams.
• Own car, driver’s license and clean driving record
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in both Arabic and English
• Focused, diplomatic, optimistic, detail and task oriented
Please be aware this is a site-based, project execution role working in and with a traditional village community, year-round and full time. This role would be suitable for someone living in Irbid Governorate who is able to commute daily to the Umm Qais Archaeological Site; the role does not provide a fuel or living allowance and applicants based in other governorates will not be considered. This role will require travel to Amman, with days and nights away from home; the ideal candidate will be flexible and comfortable with this. Contract Type: Full time contract (five days a week) with a three months’ probation period
Working Hours: 7am to 3pm (Umm Qais Site Hours) and/or 9am to 5pm (Amman Office Hours)
Main Workplace: Turquoise Mountain Project Office, Umm Qais Archaeological Site, Irbid Governorate
Occasional Workplace: Turquoise Mountain Headquarters, Jubeiha, Amman
Salary: 700 JOD (Gross)
