Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director, Business Development role is a management position. It leads a team of Business Development staff supporting the revenue and programmatic growth of CWS across all program areas. The Director will be responsible for supporting the fundraising goals of all program departments and in assisting the VP Business Development in executing CWS’ Business Development growth strategy.

Primary Purpose:

The individual will work closely with the Business Development team to support business development for all programs at CWS. Reporting to the VP of Business Development, the incumbent will be responsible for supporting fundraising goals and leveraging key relationships and contacts through the coordination of grant submissions and data management.

This position will serve as a critical management function within the Unit, assisting the VP for Business Development in managing funding relationships and priorities across all programmatic areas of CWS. The position will have management responsibilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

· Developing relationships and collaborating with key stakeholders, particularly with government institutions, bilateral/multilateral organizations and strategic partnerships with INGOs and local CSO and FBOs as needed.

· Maintaining proficient knowledge of the organization’s history and programs to leverage them for new opportunities.

· Assisting with the execution of the Business Development department’s strategy and coordinate institutional funding processes alongside relevant staff.

· Identifying grant funding opportunities alongside Associate Director BD staff, program staff, and other relevant stakeholders.

· Overseeing and directly managing the gathering intelligence on future bids, competitors, and potential partners.

· Overseeing and directly managing organizational capture process for selected bids from a variety of USG and other donors

· Writing, submitting, and managing grant proposals as needed and in service of current workflows within Business Development Unit

· Compile necessary information for the application process through collaboration with other units, database research, and other factfinding actions.

· Support the managing of BD documents and process around forecast, backlog and pipeline

Qualifications

Education:

A bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field is required. Minimum 10-years’ experience in the nonprofit sector with a concentration in grants management or U.S. government grant development.

Experience & Competencies:

The candidate needs a minimum of ten years of nonprofit experience with an emphasis in fundraising, grant management, research and analytics. Candidate must be able to demonstrate experience in submitting grants through various capacities and the details required to do such.

The candidate must have solid computer skills and knowledge of database programs, ideally Salesforce or similar donor databases. The candidate should have experience submitting grants to the US Government, and preferably experience submitting to USAID, Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, and/or Health and Human Services.

They need a high energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, with a high degree of initiative. Candidates must be organized, able to coordinate logistics and able to manage a large workload while meeting deadlines. They need the skills of flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail.

Communications: This person needs strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively. Must demonstrate “transparency of information” by articulating program strategies, priorities, standards, and expectations to stakeholders. Communicate and model CWS’ mission, values, and priorities to stakeholders.

Job Knowledge: Knows “broad stroke” information about CWS programs and can articulate CWS programs. Individuals must be culturally sensitive and understand the importance of gender-inclusiveness and intersectionality. Knowledge of global migration issues, immigration policy, refugee resettlement, and immigrant justice are strongly preferred.

Leadership: Manage the implementation of assigned fundraising activity. Accept accountability for assigned activities and adapt a work style to perform independently or within a team. Offer creative suggestions for improving the structure of assigned fundraising activities. Take initiative and demonstrate leadership on special projects as assigned.

Problem Solving: This person must have strong research and analytic abilities, with a demonstrated ability to think strategically and have a thorough understanding of strategic program development. Identify systems that contribute to the effectiveness of BD strategies. Identify and recommend workable solutions for challenged processes, considering the costs, benefits and potential consequences to CWS.

Grants Management: In collaboration with BD team (including administrative support), implement and evaluate funder activities while establishing implementation steps and time frames. Participate in gathering and analyzing information from internal and external stakeholders. Successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
