Sudan, surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya and South Sudan, positioned next to East, West, South and North Africa, is surrounded by complex conflicts in an unpredictable, volatile and rapidly evolving region. Sudan is by size the third biggest country in Africa, with a diverse population of around 42 million people. Sudan’s children make up half of the total population, and the past two decades have seen their lives significantly improve: fewer girls and boys are dying before their fifth birthday, primary school attendance is increasing, immunization coverage is high and the country remains polio free. Still, millions of children continue to suffer from protracted conflict in Darfur, the Kordofans, and Blue Nile, from seasonal natural disasters, malnutrition and disease outbreaks, and from under-investment in basic social services. More than three million of Sudan’s school aged children are not in the classroom. UNICEF has been in Sudan since 1952 and continues with a presence in 12 of Sudan’s 18 states.

How can you make a difference?

Under the guidance of the Chief of Communication and Advocacy, Communication Officer and in partnership and coordination with the rest of the Communications team and all UNICEF staff as needed:

  • Develops storylines and key messages for UNICEF Sudan’s work for key stakeholders, donors and the general public.
  • Develops communications products (e.g. website and social media content, feature articles, and print and audiovisual products) to promote UNICEF’s work, convey important advocacy public messaging, support resource mobilization efforts, as well as meet the information needs of donors and other stakeholders.
  • Drafts and edits written materials, including feature stories, news stories, fact sheets and Q&As, ensuring accuracy, consistency, coherence, and adherence to UNICEF House Style.
  • Supports UNICEF country and regional offices, and relevant departments, in proactively communicating through developing strategies and content.
  • Promotes UNICEF’s work through UNICEF digital platforms, media queries/pitches, and spokesperson interviews/briefings.
  • Partners with colleagues across the Communication team to ensure alignment, timeliness, quality and innovative approaches to communications products.
  • Participates in or organizes public events.
  • Working closely with ICTD, RO and HQ digital team on support and maintenance of digital analytics tools. 
  • Produce weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual analytical reports to assess the effectiveness and impact of digital output. Based on the analysis, make recommendations to the team on how to best apply those insights. 
  • Organize and design an internal communications database/repository based on relevant data sets and information available in-house.  
  • Provide digital analytics pieces of training and hands-on demonstrations to the section and others as needed.
  • Performs all other related duties as required.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or related field plus at least 2 years of demonstrated professional experience in the above outlined or related fields including working with the United Nations. 

Language: 

 Fluency in English and Arabic – both written and oral.

 Essential Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in digital communications / media or relevant field related to external digital media. Significant experience in developing and implementing communications content and strategies.
  • Experience producing content for the online, including photos, videos, and social media.

Desirable Experience:

 Experience working with UNICEF or other UN Agencies.

  • Using applicable techniques and tools, monitor, gather, and analyze data on the performance of UNICEF’s internal communications, especially relating to its content, user behavior, channels, and timing.  
  • Knowledge of computer systems and Office 365 tools including SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Yammer and OneDrive. 

Other Skills:  

  • Knowledge of United Nations or other international organizations.
  • UNICEF policies, guidelines, and strategies related to communication. 
  • Gender equality and diversity awareness. 

Duty Station and Travel

To be based in Khartoum with frequent travel to the field.
