Pesticide Action Network (PAN) is a network of over 600 non-governmental organisations worldwide working together to minimise the negative effects of harmful pesticides and replace them with ecologically sound alternatives. PAN Europe is the regional centre for Europe, founded in 1987, and brings together over 40 consumer, public health, and environmental organisations, trades unions, women’s groups and farmer associations from all over Europe.

Our Brussels office is looking for a Communication and Social Media Assistant to be part of our small but dynamic team. Job Purpose

As Communications and Social Media Assistant, you will be working with our campaigners and policy officers for the day-to-day matters that need to be promoted through different channels (social media, website, press).

You will be primarily responsible for creating and publishing communication content, overseeing and putting together newsletters and other publications.

We need a great team player who will be happy to bounce from scheduling meetings to communicating on complex issues in a simple way and enjoy synthesizing input from multiple sources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Production of communication materials: write articles and interviews for the organisation’s newsletter, campaign e-mails or publications. Production of videos and of visuals (infographics, drawings etc.);
  • Social media management: ensure that PAN Europe is active and well received on social media; will need to create and upload content to various platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn or our blog;
  • Events: carry out interviews with key people, assist PAN Europe’s communication towards the press and organise press events, meetings and fundraising events;
  • Administration related work: answering calls, scheduling communications meetings, preparing presentations, gathering materials for conferences, processing e-mails.

Person Specification

Education and training

  • BSc/BA in Communications or a related field is desired.

Experience and knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of recent versions of Microsoft Office software suites: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher;
  • Very good knowledge of Adobe software suites: Photoshop, Premiere Pro, InDesign or other is a plus;
  • Deep knowledge and experience in managing social media platforms (personal and professional accounts);
  • Desirable a first experience with journalists and interviewees.

Key competencies

  • Fluent in spoken and written English; knowledge of additional EU languages is an asset;
  • Good organisational skills with an eye for detail; flexible and proactive;
  • Able to set priorities and enjoy juggling between meetings, writing and public relations events;
  • Writing and editing skills to produce clear, concise and professional press releases, articles, blog posts and email campaigns;
  • Autonomous and motivated with artistic skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to carry a conversation with people from different backgrounds and levels of experience;
  • Commitment to PAN Europe’s vision, mission, values, and a working style which reflects these.

Location & Employment details

Working from another EU country is a possibility but the employee will need to be able to come to Brussels several times a year.

PAN Europe can initially offer a fixed-term contract for six months, renewable, on a part-time basis (20-25 hours per week) distributed over at least four days a week.

The salary to be paid will be in line with the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience and comparable to that offered by other Brussels-based NGOs.
