BACKGROUND

The Adolescent Development and Participation Section of UNICEF’s Programme Division and partners have numerous core documents that require professional copy-editing services to ensure consistency and improve readability.

Terms of Reference / Deliverables

Working with the Adolescent Development Manager, the selected candidate will provide professional copy-editing services for 10-15 UNICEF products, approximately 184 pages of material (case studies, guidance documents, teachers’ guides, web text) related to adolescent development, participation and wellbeing.

 The Copy Editor will proofread text and correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors; check text for style and ensure easy readability (for a global audience of diverse stakeholders); and verify factual correctness of information such as dates and statistics (as requested, depending on product).

Copy editing will be done in adherence to UNICEF’s policies as per UNICEF’s Style Book and in agreement with the supervisor.    The deadline for completion is 15 December 2021.

 The core documents include: 

  1. [General] Adolescent Development documents (40 pages);
  2. Protocol for the Safe and Meaningful Engagement of Young People (30 pages);
  3. Revision to the Youth Advocacy Guide (20 pages);
  4. PPPX pages + Life Course Paper (28 pages);
  5. ING China Final Report (8 pages);
  6. Brief on Adolescent Guidelines on Young People in Emergencies (2 pages);
  7. Update of the Adolescent Kit website (6 web pages);
  8. Helping Adolescents Thrive Teachers Guide and Comic Lesson Plans (50 pages).

Qualifications

(1)  Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, International Affairs, Linguistics, or a relevant field. 
  • The individual should be highly proficient in a range of PC/web applications, including but not limited to:   MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, and Lotus Notes.

(2)  Work experience

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in copy-editing, including experience with substantive editing of large and complex documents.
  • Advanced English language skills.
  • It is preferable that the individual has experience with UNICEF documents.  Knowledge of UNICEF context essential.  Knowledge of UN documents an added advantage.

  • Strong organizational, planning, and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
  • Good judgment, initiative, high sense of responsibility, tact and discretion.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and ability to establish harmonious working relations in a multicultural environment.)

 Requirements:

  • Completed profile in UNICEF’s e-Recruitment system and provide Personal History Form (P11) Upload copy of academic credentials
  • Financial proposal that will include:
  • your daily/monthly rate (in US$) to undertake the terms of reference (can be downloaded here: https://www.unicef.org/about/employ/index_consultancy_assignments.html 
    • travel costs and daily subsistence allowance, if internationally recruited or travel is required as per TOR.
    • Any other estimated costs: visa, health insurance, and living costs as applicable.

  • Any emergent / unforeseen duty travel and related expenses will be covered by UNICEF.
  • At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.
  • Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.

U.S. Visa information:

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4.
