Purpose of Activity/Assignment:

In collaboration with the National Department of Social Development (DSD), UNICEF has conducted an Audit of Unaccompanied and Separated Migrant Children in Alternative Care (Child and Youth Care Centers and Foster Care). UNICEF entered into a partnership agreement with the South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) to conduct the audit in nine provinces. The Audit is now completed, and preliminary report has been drafted by UNICEF.  UNICEF is now seeking a professional and technical writer to finalize the report.

How can you make a difference?

SCOPE OF WORK:

1: Finalize the Audit of Unaccompanied and Separated Migrant Children in Alternative Care Report

Work closely and coordinate with responsible officers in DSD and UNICEF for the write up and editing of high-quality report, based on analysis of the data collected and available literature. This will involve:

  • Restructuring the draft report and rewrite the areas of text as needed, including analysis of data to promote clarity, continuity, and internal consistency and incorporate reviewers’ comments.
  • Fact-check the statements for accuracy and completion of references as/when required.
  • Provide accuracy and consistency in capitalization, abbreviations/acronyms, notes, bibliography, titles, graphs, and tables as DSD and UNICEF branding standards and guidelines.
  • Ensure that the language used is impactful and highlights the situation of migrant children in alternative care.
  • Identify potential sensitivities in the report
  • Develop and ensure consistency in overall layout, adding relevant graphs, pictures and visibility products, including human interest stories when required.

2: Produce Two Knowledge Management products

Based on the Audit and Unaccompanied and Separated Migrant Children in Alternative Care Report outlined in Task 1 above:  Produce the following Knowledge management products for use in advocacy and fundraising:

  • Develop a maximum four-pager funding proposal based on the report recommendations
  • Develop a Power Point Presentation: Maximum 10 Slides of the report, highlighting key findings and recommendations.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in research and data analysis, graphic design, proof reading, formatting publications and articles
  • Demonstrable experience and knowledge on policies, laws and programmes for Children on the Move in South Africa
    *A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of [5 years] of relevant professional experience 
  • Ability to work independently, remotely and to ensure high-quality deliverables
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with UNICEF, UNHCR or IOM is desirable
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
