UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, a voice

UNICEF South Africa (SACO) has an annual fundraising target of US$8.3 million and this position plays a vital role in realizing that target. The office has been fundraising from the private sector for over 10 years and while fundraising has primarily been through corporate partnerships, the office is now building its individual-giving supporter base, including through major donors and high net worth individuals (HNWI). SACO has extended its fundraising work with a focus on the high network individuals in South Africa and this consultancy will take those efforts to the next level, whilst also supporting and engaging on select corporate relationships to maximize financial and other resources in support of the most vulnerable children across South Africa.

How can you make a difference?

The consultant will report to the Partnerships Manager and work closely with the Chief of Communications & Partnerships in providing strategic support to the fundraising section, seeking to start/leverage the donor revenue streams of High Net Worth Individuals in South Africa, as well as building on and creating new corporate partnerships. The consultant will also liaise closely with programming colleagues to understand the work and fundraising gaps related to education; child protection; health and nutrition; and water and sanitation sectors. The goal is to increase high-net worth individuals and family foundation activities in South Africa, with a prospective pipeline of donors on a 12-18-month time horizon, whilst also nurturing and building corporate relationships as and where relevant.

Strategy:

  • Identify an external agency and oversee a landscape analysis on the current major donor / corporate fundraising market in South Africa, reflecting the impact of COVID-19.
  • Following the research findings, revise the major donor strategy as part of the broader resource mobilization strategy, to reflect the potential for outreach and results from high-net worth individuals and family foundations.
  • Identify and research high-net worth individuals, families, and family foundations with an expected inclination to support UNICEF South Africa.

Managing, prospecting, and converting:

  • Reach out to and build relationships with prospective HNWI’s, according to mutual opportunities, including UNICEF South Africa’s sector specific fundraising priorities, and draft engaging proposals and pitches, in collaboration with all sections and senior management.
  • Everyday management of existing partnerships and maximizing opportunities to showcase the support provided and our broad range of partnerships.
