Data Analyst

Job Summary:

In this role, you will work closely with cutting-edge global climate, environmental, economic, and investment datasets, and support the development of data platforms. You will work with teams and colleagues across WRI to establish and maintain data platforms, conduct quantitative research and spatial analysis, and assist in data-driven analysis and project development in China. To carry out these tasks, you will work in a cross-programs and multidisciplinary platform at WRI. This role is based in Beijing, China, and reports to the WRI China’s Senior Data Advisor.


Responsibilities:

 

City Dashboard Development & Research (40%)

  • Work with Sustainable Cities Program to establish and maintain a web-based city dashboard with regular updates
  • Assist with managing dashboard vendors, including vendor seeking, screening, and selections, etc.
  • Support to develop the protocol for data collections and sharing
  • Conduct data collection and analysis about city assessment and comparison.
  • Contribute to written outputs, including peer-reviewed articles, WRI working papers, and blog posts

 

Sustainable Investment (40%)

  • Work with Sustainable Investment Program to develop online tools to track and reflect investment impacts covering domestic and overseas investments to the infrastructural and industrial sectors
  • Develop interactive visualizations for communicating research outcomes
  • Provide technical support to advanced data collection and analysis as needed
  • Keep the site updated with relative information and perform routine site maintenance as needed
  • Exposure to idea presentation and fundraising opportunities

 

Global Water Research & Analysis (15%)

  • Conduct quantitative research and spatial analysis about global water and physical climate risks to governments, development banks, and multi-national corporations
  • Support the development of machine learning algorithms for near-real time water quantity and quality monitoring and forecasts
  • Provide technical support to Aqueduct partners and users as needed
  • Develop and execute Python and Google Earth Engine scripts for data acquisition, processing, and analysis
  • Work with cloud storage and computing platforms, e.g., AWS, Google, Azure
  • Contribute to written outputs, including peer-reviewed articles, WRI working papers, and blog posts
  • Collect data and information from public websites and literature

 

Other Technical Support (5%)

  • Assist in other data-driven analysis and project development in China
  • Support staff and partners on data, modeling, and visualization on request


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in earth science, environmental science/engineering, data engineering, or other related fields, Master’s degree preferred
  • Maximum of 4 years of related professional work experience
  • Experiences in data mining and analysis and complex modeling preferred
  • Proficient in Python and GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS and/or QGIS)
  • Experience with Google Earth Engine is a strong plus
  • Proven ability to take initiative and responsibility and deliver high quality results
  • Excellent time-management skills and a flexible attitude
  • Fluent in writing and speaking in both English and Mandarin
  • Experience with cloud computing and web development is a plus
