Description of Job

GENERAL SUMMARY

Community College of Denver is seeking individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and work environment. Responsibilities for this position include teaching effectively basic-skills and college-level economics courses, including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and related courses. Full-time faculty are also responsible for assessment of student learning, implementing retention strategies and contributing service to the Community College environment.

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally-responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Native American students, who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional economics classrooms.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Primary teaching duties will be in Economics. A full course load is defined as 15 credit hours per semester, with alternative assignments for administrative and related duties possible. Faculty must command strong teaching skills and be able to engage students using traditional, nontraditional, and innovative methods of instruction, including the use of technology. Faculty must maintain accurate student records and post office hours. A commitment to student academic success that goes beyond the classroom is essential, as are effective interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills. Faculty should remain current on discipline content, technology, and teaching/learning strategies. This position develops and utilizes a retention strategy to maximize student success and retention in their area of study. Faculty will be responsible for developing and conducting assessment strategy to ensure institutional and learning outcomes.

In addition to teaching, this position works collaboratively with the chair and other faculty to develop and modify curriculum and engage in other departmental initiatives and responsibilities. This includes efforts to maintain departmental coherence across CCD’s many instructional venues; contributing to textbook selection; attending departmental, center, and college meetings; and mentoring and collaborating with Economics adjuncts. Other duties may include advising students on programs and

degree planning. All full-time faculty are also expected to serve on college committees and participate in activities that promote the college, vision, mission, goals, and assessment.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Education:
Master’s degree in economics or business administration with 18 graduate credits in economic; or a master’s in related field with 18 graduate credits in economics from an accredited academic program.

Experience:
Experience teaching in a higher education setting, particularly at the community college level.

Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of economics shape patterns of participation and outcomes.

Willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.

Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom.

Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in economics, particularly as it relates to the relevance of economics to students’ lives, interests, and communities.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge and/or experience with curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse populations.

Knowledge and/or experience with the use of instructional technology including classroom application distance learning.

Instructional innovation experience.

Evidence of incorporating technology into instruction.

Experience/familiarity with assessment of student learning, instructional effectiveness, and adult learning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Education:
Master’s degree in economics or a master’s in business administration with 18 graduate credits in current economic topics like data analytics, business analytics and corporate finance

Experience:
Two (2) years of teaching economics at a community college.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within economics courses and classrooms.

Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.
