Role background

The Instant Network Schools (INS) programme was jointly developed by Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) and has become one of UNHCR’s flagship Connected Education programmes today. Connected Education uses innovative approaches to expand and enhance quality education and increase digital literacy for displaced communities and those that host them. The vision of INS is to ensure that all refugees, and the communities that host them, are able to fully engage in the economic, social, and cultural world of today and tomorrow. We deliver this through increased access to accredited, quality, and relevant learning opportunities supported by connectivity and dynamic digital resources. INS provides an end-to-end solution which transforms an existing classroom into a multimedia learning hub. This involves a teacher training programme; curation of digital content aligned to the local curriculum; and creating an empowering multimedia environment leveraging technology. Partner schools also benefit from infrastructure investments such as sustainable solar power, teacher display kits (including laptop, speakers and a projector), and a set of educational tablets. We seek to empower teachers and students with technology to improve academic performance whilst increasing digital literacy.

Since 2014, the INS programme has established 47 centres in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Egypt and Mozambique having benefited an estimated 100,000 students and over 2,000 teachers so far. In October 2020, INS won the Financial Times/International Finance Corporation Award for Education, Knowledge and Skills.

By 2025, INS will be expanded to up to 300 schools across 6 countries. Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR are implementing a staged rollout to ensure sustainable partner buy-in and integration into local education systems with 30 new schools to be opened this year. Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR have an ambitious target of reaching 10,000 teachers and 510,000 students by 2025, and indirectly over one million people from students, teachers, parents & community members.

We are looking for dynamic and tech-savvy education specialist to join our team on this exciting journey.
