About Fenix Humanitarian Legal Aid

We are convinced that a simplistic approach to legal aid in humanitarian crises is insufficient and dehumanizing. Addressing the whole person, including their physical, psychological, emotional, social and legal needs, is an essential part of achieving a just and equitable outcome in the asylum process, which is the first step towards starting a new life in a safe country.

Besides providing legal services to asylum seekers in the camps in Lesvos, we prepare a holistic plan of action for the wellbeing of the client including mental health. A crucial part of focusing on the well-being of our clients consists of creating a space where clients feel safe, heard and supported.

Since October 2020, we provide Mental Health and Psychosocial Support to respond to the insufficient mental health support on the island, as well as the urgent need for in-house services to avoid retraumatization and support our teams with complex situations taking place in our office (hallucinations, panic attacks, psychotic attacks and flashbacks). The team focuses on the following activities:

  • Stabilization, psychological first aid, individual sessions, assessments, and evaluation and reports for the asylum procedure.

  • Weekly group sessions for women, young male adults from 18-25 years old (many of them unrecognized unaccompanied minors registered as adults), and translators from the refugee community working for NGOs.

  • Psychiatric care. We collaborate with private psychiatrists and with the Psychiatric Unit of the Mytilini Public Hospital.
