About the role

We are looking for a Brussels-based lawyer to join our Fisheries Project and help improve fisheries management in Europe and put an end to overfishing. 

We are a legal and environmental charity that uses the power of the law to fight against climate change and to protect nature and the environment. In this role, you will be working on issues relating to the implementation and revision of the EU Fisheries Control System and to the implementation of the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) through advocacy and legal action. The role involves a mix of developing and managing legal actions and participating in policy development and advocacy work.

Meet your Manager

In this role, you will be managed by Elisabeth Druel, who is based in our Brussels office. Elisabeth joined ClientEarth in 2015 to work on fisheries control and the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. In 2019, she became Fisheries Project Lead, and now oversees the work of the team in areas such as the elimination of harmful fisheries subsidies, the implementation of the EU Common Fisheries Policy, and the fight against illegal fishing

Main Duties

  • Contribute to the advocacy efforts of the coalition of NGOs involved in the revision of the EU Fisheries Control System
  • Draft legal briefings, proposed amendments to legislation, research notes, policy analysis, press releases
  • Represent ClientEarth, participate in external meetings and undertake advocacy efforts
  • Research and evaluate the potential for using litigation and regulatory interventions to ensure compliance with the law on fisheries control and management
  • Participate in the selection, development, and management of ClientEarth’s fisheries-related cases and other legal interventions,
  • Contribute to the development of funding proposals and reports to donors
  • Support efforts to raise public awareness about fisheries issues

Role requirements

  • Degree in law
  • Significant experience in law or policy development, at national or EU levels
  • An excellent understanding of the political, institutional, and policy landscape relevant to EU decision making processes and law/policy development
  • A strong interest in environmental and/or fisheries law
  • Excellent drafting, editing, and oral communication skills
  • Fluent (CEFR level C2) in English (essential)
  • Fluent (CEFR level C2) in another European language (essential)
