Description of Organization:  The Bureau for Development, Democracy and Innovation (DDI) seeks a qualified, motivated professional to serve as a Supervisory Environmental Protection Officer in the Biodiversity Division in the Center for Environment, Energy and Infrastructure.  The Biodiversity Division leads the Agency’s $320 million biodiversity conservation portfolio and implements the USAID Biodiversity Policy.

Qualifications:

  • One year of relevant experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (FS-02 or GS-14).  Relevant academic, professional, and technical experience in the area of international biodiversity conservation and adaptive management;
  • Must be a U.S. citizen; and
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret-level security clearance.

Successful candidates must demonstrate the following: 

  • Extensive experience with biodiversity conservation and its integration with other development sectors including with methods and techniques to apply new approaches to global problems;
  • Experience managing, advising, and/or mentoring people and teams.  Skill in coordinating, negotiating, and motivating individuals to take action;
  • Expertise and ability to investigate and provide consultative services on a range of technical questions and policy issues including, for example, natural resource management; nature-based solutions; countering conservation crimes; and policy reform;
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to effectively manage biodiversity conservation programs and work with a diverse range of stakeholders.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and cross-culturally with individuals or groups in a variety of situations to present ideas and solve problems.  Ability to exhibit diplomacy, and resourcefulness in dealing with high-level officials of international organizations, and other foreign and domestic government officials and development partners;
  • Highly developed written and oral communications skills as well as strong interpersonal communication and team-building skills to ensure effective coordination within USAID and effective advocacy of Agency positions externally with both specialist as well as non-specialist audiences; and
  • The ability to represent USAID at international fora and provide thought leadership in the field through partnership and relationship-building.
